Yes. It's a classic, but it moves slowly. Nicholson really plays up the surly, disaffected loner bit. If the rest of the film was as good as the diner scene, though, it would have been a riot.
I need to revisit that film, I haven't seen it since the 1970s.
If it was received well at the time then it hasn't aged gracefully. In fact most of those disillusioned/counterculture "important" films of that era seem borderline juvenile now. Chinatown is a notable exception.
