Combining lifting with soccer

Kevin_

New member
Lifting for about a year now.
190lbs, 6"2
Don't know about bodyfat, must be something like 15%.

I play soccer every wednesday (prac) and sunday (game), and try to go running for about 2 times a week when I can't make it to soccer practise because of work.

Hence I'm Belgian, I've never heard of and done anything else than the usual 3day/week bodypart split.
I've started looking at Starrs 5x5 and I want to give it a try, but won't my knees and calves kill me if I do that along with soccer and running? My goals are losing bodyfat and getting an athletic, muscular physique, should I try another program then, any suggestions? Maybe an on-season football program? Football & soccer don't really differ that much as for your leg activity.

Maxes, approx:
BP 200lbs
Squat 260lbs
BOR 175lbs
DL max 265lbs

there is no way you can compare football and soccer

the 5x5 is a good way to train and it will help you to get to your desired
physique. just work out around your soccer schedule. I would recommened
not working out on Friday since you have your games on Saturday.

Football and soccer are totally different for leg activity. Soccer youre often running long distances, football is a series of a lot of short quick sprints.... I don't see a problem with doing 5x5 along with soccer, I have a couple friends who play competitive soccer and do it without a problem. GL.

If I were you I wouldn't even keep the volume as high as 5 X 5, maybe 3 X 5... with DL's, squats, etc... finding the correct balance between lifting and sport is one of the hardest things there is and to be honest with you I never got it perfect. I could never integrate 5 x 5 when I was training for anything other than size and strength. I suppose it depends on what you care about the most... are you looking to use weights to imprive soccer or only just to improve your physique?

he pretty much sums it up here, what are your goals? are you training for sport-specific reasons or are you trying to get bigger and stronger? It really isn't feasible to accomplish both especially if you are playing a sport like soccer...the 5x5 is a good starting program, but you have to evaluate what you really want
