Chinny Chin CHINS!!!

It's obvious that a large percentage of peeps on the boards feel "Chins" are the best way to grow your back. My question is, does this refer to a regular "chin-up" (palms facing you), or are we talking about pull-ups (palms facing away). I want to know the proper form, as I am doing back today and want to see how these hit my lats. Thanks so much in advance!

when people say chins talking about back they will mean wide overhand grip, if people talk about reverse grip chins, curl grip chins, narrow grip chins or underhand chins they mean palms facing you :)

Chins are sick either way!

I through the term chins around loosely. By chin I mean palms facing away. I think that is actually a pull up though. All I know is if you want a wide/thick back you need to be doing some sort of vertical pulling exercise. Chins and pull ups are the best.

lol, I always state chins as palms facing toward me, kinda like when you do a bicep curl. Pullups palms facing away. To me, "chins" are easier than "pullups".

I do reverse grip chins (palms facing) with bi's and wide grip rack chins (palms facing away) for lats.

You can usually tell which version people are talking about though for example someone might say "one i could do 20 wide grip chins i started adding weight and concentrating on them really brought out my upper lats" then they mean wide overhand

The words themselves are misleading. You are pulling yourself up with each exercise and I believe the goal is to get the chin to clear the bar either way also.

An easy way to fix this is make one of those words universal and say whether it's either supinated or pronated, but I don't see one of the words becoming universal any time soon ;)

Also how do you say the neutral grip variation? Neutral grip pullups or neutral grip chins? lol

Either way you do them, you don't just pull your chin to the bar! Try and hit your chest, sternum or (if behind the neck) traps. Then pause and squeeze for a full contraction. Most people seem to think they are ready to add weight before they can handle even a few reps like this. If you're trying to set a new record for reps, then sure, chin level is a good minimum height to pull to, but if you're training for development, then do it right!
