Athens, Greece (Sports Network) - Teenager Liu Chunhong of China set a world record in winning the women's 69kg weightlifting division on Thursday.
Chunhong won the gold with maybe the best-ever performance in the sport, as a total of 18 World and Olympic records were broken in the event at the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall.
Liu broke records with each of her five lifts and finished the event holding all six world and Olympic records in the light heavyweight class for snatch (122.5kg), clean and jerk (153kg) and total (275kg).
It's an incredible feat not just for the sense of the record, but also because Liu is just 19 and switched over to weightlifting after competing in judo.
"I was advised to do so by my coach because my physical condition was not good enough for judo," Liu said. "It was a good decision, in the end." Eszter Krutzler of Germany and Russia's 17-year-old Zarema Kasaeva tried hard to compete with Liu by matching European records with exactly the same lifts of 117.5kg snatch, 145kg clean and jerk and 262.5kg in total, but Liu just overpowered the field.
Krutzler took the silver medal on bodyweight difference, with Kasaeva picking up the bronze.
