Cardio vs. HIIT

lol if you control the time, I think HIIT would win out. Burns more calories during and after the workout, albeit a lot of it may be protein/carbs, the basal metabolic rate remains elevated for a longer period of time. I find HIIT a lot more fun but I'd only do it for 15-20 min.

Exactly my opinion. You have to think of HIIT as "Concentrated Cardio". It works great for people in a rush (or those who hate cardio) since it takes only 20 mins to get a great workout.

For steady state cardio, you could not get away with a short 20 mins workout, you need to at least stay on that bike for 30 mins and most people will go to 45 min.

I particularly prefer a combination of both: 45 min at 75 ~ 85% MHR (it is not as high as HIIT but not as low as steady state).

this combination has worked for me very well.

20 min is all thats needed for HIIT. Is sprinting the most effective form?

Sprinting is very effective at making your heart race. but as with normal cardio, anything that will make you go to 110% MHR is good.

As some signature in here: "Sex is the best cardio"... problem is to keep it going at that pace for that long!!! :p

It is not that 20 min is all that is needed for HIIT. It is that if you are TRUELY going at 100% on the "hard intervals", you will not be able to do much more. For example, if you can do a HIIT sessions for 60 min, you are certainly not doing the intervals hard enough. After each hard interval, you should honestly feel like your heart is going to pound out of your chest, breathing should be extremely labored, and your legs feel like rubber.

Sprinting IS very effective, and quite easy - you don't necessarily need equipment to do it. (not easy as in workload, easy bec can do it anywhere)

But it is not the only thing you can do. You can do HIIT on anything - Spin bike, StepMill, stairs outside, etc ......

Effectiveness is all a matter of what YOU put into it.

What do you recommend for high and low times. Ex) 2 min warm up, 30 sec. 50%, then 30 sec 100%? I've heard so many different ones suggested. Which is optimum?

I Know this....Last night I went out and did 10 min of HIIT in 32 degree weather. The cold didnt get to me but this shit is no joke. Its hardcore stuff. I thought i was gonna die. Cant wait to do it again today.

If you think you are gonna die AT least 10 times (once per low intensity cycle) it means you are doing it right...

Man it does feel like you are going to puke your heart out (with a side dish of lungs too)

Well tried it again tonight but my legs hurt bad i guess from the first session. Guess ill have to wait until i adapt to it. Anyone else get this problem?
