carb up - weight gain...

last week I was hypo caloric all week (m-f). my carbs where low and only came from oatmeal. Friday I weighed in at 273.5 pounds... This weekend I made sure I ate a maintenance level ate 3 times the carbs I would eat during the week through out the day... I did not eat great but I did not go over maintenance... Moved furniture all day Saturday and trained chest Sunday... Today I get on the scale and it tips out at 277... WTF... Is this water gain because of the simple carbs???

I am hoping that I will weigh in a couple of pounds less this Friday than I did last Friday

just to clarify - i am not on a keto diet, i just try and keep my carbs low becauase i rather spend my calories on protein... my ratios are about 50% protein - 25% fat - 25% carb. All clean foods during the week..

Probably. A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds.

Even if you don't weigh in lighter this Friday, it's not the end of the world. I think we get awfully wrapped up in the intricacies of dieting on this board, and sometimes take for granted the luxury of health. I was up the better part of last night vomiting my guts out from food poisoning, literally, and just as I was mentally grousing how it would screw up my workouts for the next few days, it occurred to me that being healthy enough to diet and push my body to extremes with excercise are privileges, not rights. Food for thought.

The more fat you have the more water you will hold. If you were hypocaloric all week you probably weren't holding much water at all. When you went maintenance and were eating 3 times the carbs, that constant supply of carbs will make you hold more water, and like I said the more fat you have, the more water you will hold.

ceebs: I hope you feel better - do you know what you ate that was bad??? btw - I always enjoy reading your posts....

I was just worried because I have been having great results with the current diet and for once my energy levels and strength levels are not too whacky...

I keep a log of my weight for my diet, and a chart to track it, and I carb up on Saturdays. Every Sunday my morning weigh-in is like 3-4lbs heavier. It drops back down the following day, and more the day after. Don't e'n wurr bout it! It's alllll water and glycogen.

Thank you, I'm a little better now. What made me sick was eating some homemade sashimi that hadn't been refrigerated since it was sashimified.

Rule of thumb, don't get too wrapped up in what the scale says. That's the gravitational pull of your body to the earth. If you go by how you feel - and you say that your energy and strength have been awesome - then you're making progress.
