Calling the Geek Squad. A question for computer folks!

Hoping anyone can help me. There is this parasite of a program that has installed itself on my laptop called SPYDAWN. I deleted every single sign of this worm off my PC, but it still pops up at the bottom of my pc saying "system message there is a virus affecting your computer"
I cannot get rid of the icon at the bottom and also when I go to hit my HOME (which is google), it goes to their web site and a pop up comes up saying I have a virus and need to download their software to get rid of it.
How the HELL do I get this friggin thing totally removed from my pc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

awesome.....you guys are great cept this fuck head who bombed me for asking this question

Thanks guys :-)

That usually doesn't work to remove installed programs. Have to actually remove the files.

I don't even know the difference, lol. I've tried it for stuff that I couldn't remove manually (like things you delete that reincarnate themselves, lol), and it worked. That was a couple years ago, however, and I'm sure stuff has changed.

I never understood the purpose of people creating spyware. Why do they care about monitering your internets usage? What do they get from infecting others computeres?

The original spyware was simply a way to track what people were doing on the Internet as this is valuable information to sell to marketing companies. Who goes where, what time of day, do they purchase or just browse and so on. If it had stopped at that we might have tolerated it, but the trouble is it got more and more invasive, and quite often the programming was sloppy and either slowed our systems, or stopped them working properly at all.

thanks ...I am downloading Spyhunter from the site wiki security.
It also mentions how to remove the files manually, so trying that.

I would go with ad aware or spybot really.
I remember spyhunter and not liking it much.

yeah this spyhunter is confusing me. I see that they want me to buy the software. Do I need to buy spybot or it a free download?
I just tried to delete the files manually and rebooted and it still doesn't work.
Argghhh.....very frustrating!

For some of the files you will have to go into your registry. Find someone who knows what they are doing to help you for that.
Spybot is free and so is ad aware.

Once it's cleaned, don't forget to take backups from now on. That way, if this happens again, you can always go to the last backup.
