Damn, jnuts posted basically the same link I was going to post for you to check out, lol. Basically DVDs hold their main movie files in .vob files. If you have an avi or mpeg you're gonna have to convert it to a .vob file (or a couple of em).
Here are some ripping and burning (authoring) tools that might help ya:

Also here's a tutorial on how to make a DVD to DVD copy step by step:
