building lats

Chinups, BB rows, one-arm DB rows, pullups/pulldown (with grip variations)

Some argue deadlifts, but I don't think I would consider it a movement that encourages huge growth in the lats ... up for debate

Right now im doing this:

Barbell Rows
Seated Cable Rows
Full Hang Chins to front
Hyperextensions

Back is coming along nicely.

Deadlifts..... Its a core compound movement that recruits all major muscles in your back. I was watching a ron colemsn tape a while back and the narator asked him how he got his lats so big. He said deadlifts were his best massbuilder for is back hands down. At the time I was like whatever I didnt seee how they could make your lats grow not long after that I started doing deads every time I worked back. Well its been about 3 months and my back size and sterenth have really improved. Im positive it is from the deadlifts. Just try deads for a month, give your self time to get used to the movement and see if you notice a differance. I almost garentee you will

The width of your lats is developed with any pulldown/up motion, but to have that moster look that so many are looking for you need the complete back and deads are a core to that. IMO.

As much as I love deads, in the two years I did them and gaining 105lbs of strength in a little over a year, I got NO upper body growth at all. Ive been plateaud. Waist has gotten thicker though. I was focusing alot on one rep maxing, but doing reps as well, and many many sets. Id go with rows and chins as the staple for building lats.

I agree that deads dont directly build lats but I do belive they pre exaust the entire back so you get a better over all back workout.

Yes, theyll definately pre-exhaust the entire back. I often find myself doing too much deadlifting and leaving little energy for the rest of the upper back. Done in moderation I think they can be very useful. I have a hard time with moderation when it comes to deadlifting. I just tend to keep going until I cant go anymore.

Guys, let's not forget Pullovers for building GREAT lats. Either DB's or better yet, Machine Pullovers to keep constant tension on the lats. That's in addition to Chins & Rows.

ANybody do the old school bent over rows with the olimpic bar in the corner and a v grip?........ I love that movement, it really blows up the width

thats a variation of t-bar rows,
actually probably works the best of all the variations

On back day I go in this order: deadlifts, chin-ups/pull-ups, barbell/dumbell rows. My lats, along with everything else, have been growing in nicely.

And also, like others have said, t-bar rows in the corner with a double-d handle are great for lats.

Dumbell rows seem to engage the lats more than chinups for me.

wow, that is exactly what i was going to say. i thought twice about posting because most say 'chins/pullups' but i have found in my unique case that it is rows in general that have built up my lats and the mind/muscle connection

I have found that standing bent over side DB raises (don't know the technical term for this, also seen as side lat raises) does a job on my lats. a job I say!
