I recently made the switch to brown rice. I've been cooking it in my rice cooker, exactly the same way I used to with white rice. Problem is, it always seems kinda hard and undercooked, and usually gives me (pardon my French) the shits. What's going on? Does brown rice need to be cooked longer that white rice? I've read that the longer you cook rice, the higher it's GI goes? Can anybody fill me in on this? Thanks.

Brown rice usually takes a lot longer to cook than white. Why don't you just read the label on the packet?

The extra fiber found in brown rice is probably causing you those problems down below!

white rice has a higher GI than brown rice

BUT

white rice AND brown rice has the same (high) Insulin index !!
yes I wrote "high" !

I steam brown rice in my rice cooker as well and the instruction manual said that brown rice needs more water (about 3/4 cup). Hope that helps!

3/4 cup of water for how much rice? The general rule for cooking white rice is to use twice as much water as you have rice. How much water do you use for brown rice? 3 times? 4 times? Thanks.

What the hell is an "insulin index"!? Please don't tell me brown rice is off-limits for cutting too...

Cuts...
For example, say you're cooking 1 cup of brown rice...then use 2 and 3/4 cups water (instead of the 2cups you would use for just white rice). Am I making sense?

I can't believe my eyes!
I thought I'm the only one who experienced problems with brown rice! :) I usually get pretty strong heartburn or whatever the name is of this terrible burning of your esophagus. Longer times of cooking do help (I use three times more water in my Rice Cooker than normally recommended). Never ever got any problems with white rice. Asked Indian and Chinese guys at work for some tips & tricks, they told they eat white rice only! (maybe fenugreek or whatever herbs/species they use help lower GI index?).
And just today I've read in www.t-mag.com, (last LA Dawg section), that brown rice can go "stale" when stored and that will be bad for your stomach!
Wild rice seem to be bad too :-(

Just went back and read your post again... sorry, brain fart I guess... Thanks, I'll give it a try.
