Blue Ray or HD DVD?

Since Blockbuster announced it will offer blue ray only and the fact that only one movie house is formating in HD DVD, I wonder which will go the way of the Beta tape?

I have an HD DVD player (only 1080i) and I am going to compare that to blue ray. The HD DVD comes in 1080p, I will probably buy one, try it out then return it if I don't like it.

Of course a blue ray experiment is a bit pricier to examine.

My main objetive is to compare image quality etc on my 47 inch lcd 1080p hd tv, and my 73 inch 1080p hd dlp tv. Choose one, then make it standard at my house and for my movie room.

Anyone ever done a comparison.

My friend went out and bought a HD player just for this.. his blu ray player was on the ps3..

he has a 46" plasma 1080p hd tv..

didn't do any side by side comparisions since we only had one tv BUT we did notice it really depended on the DVD.. we had Tomb Raider on Blu Ray and on HD.. the blu ray one was super shitty, it would have been better on regular DVD it was so grainy but it marked that up to a scratched up disk, it had hairline scratches all over it..

The 5th element was awesome on blu ray and on HD and I'm not anal enough to tell a HUGE difference, I'd mark it mostly up to my bias that Blu Ray was better.

Sound quality wise Blu Ray just seemed to have more BOOM in it. He has a 7.1 surround sound system so we really got the experience and although I couldn't tell a difference in the picture I could tell a little in the sound.. but that's my 2 cents.. I'm far from a professional, just love movies and I liked the blu ray better'

as to which will win the war, it's impossible to tell, only time will tell

since sony ditched porn........I'm gonna go with HD. There is NO WAY IN HELL I'm going to buy a dvd player that "sony" dominates the manufacturing for. I hate sony on all levels.......their shit sucks ass!! And I'm being serious about the porn thing........you don't have to watch porn to appreciate the fact that DVD sales just from that industry will probably bury blu ray sales.

I wouldn't doubt it about the blue ray and porn. I am mostly interested in visual quality being a photographer. But sound is as important. I definitely believe that it will really come down to the quality of cinematography and post processing that will determine which movies will have better quality.

Given that at 1080p both formats will require the same amount of information, the blue ray gee weez item is that it can store twice the informtion (even though it is not required for 1080p) so I see the battle coming down to what studios want to produce.

I've compared them many times against each other and it really seems to be how I am feeling that day on which one I like better. There are some shitty dvds for each of them and some awesome ones. Guess I'll just wait it out or buy a player for both ....

Picture and sound quality will depend on who encoded the dvd not whether its Blue-ray or HD-dvd.

and once you're HD..your not going to be able to notice a difference in picture quality.

And who cares if it can store twice the info(if it even can) all that means is that they will put more of the worthless "extras" shit that I never watch anyway and just charge more for it.

Be honest, the whole reason you made this thread is so you could boast about your tv's.

(Technological aspect aside, I think Bluray will win. At this point it's all about marketing and who Sony/Microsoft can get to support their format)

LOL @ people who "hate" SONY products

More like can't AFFORD their quality

I can afford them, but I dislike Sony as a company, I dont like any company that tries to force you into using only their formats and hardware.

They're been caught many times doing deceptive shit ie putting fake movie movie reviews, writing their playstation hardware code to corrupt non Sony memory cards, putting code on their audio cds that would fuck up your computer... lots of shit like that.

I have an HD-DVD and Blue Ray player, so I'm prepped for either...but I'd bank on HD winning this one. The Walmart force is too strong, and HD DVDs and players are cheaper to make and sell making them more immediately accessible to the average joe. I like the blue ray format better, but...well we'll see.

Regular DVD does the job for me.

Same here.

I bought a upconvert dvd player and it's just as good as High Def for me.

Plus I can buy regular dvds for $5-$10 as opposed to $25-$35 for HD ones.

Just an aside here...but...lol....WHY would anyone want to see porn in super high resolution? Do you really need to see every ass dimple (or pimple :worried: ), penis vein and stray pussy hair?? In any case, agreed with the poster who said the surge of porn over the internet since the days of VHS/Beta will vastly lessen the role the porn industry plays in this.

true.

Those bitches have to be well groomed, cropped, chopped, bleached, waxed, and acid washed before they go on Blu-ray haha.

Actually just for fun I bought my first HD-DVD Porn...Pirates. I have to say I was fairly impressed, no extra pimples, no stray pussy hairs (seeing as they are all waxed anyways) and the video of course was great. It was like watching a live orgy 3' in front of me lol...

I edit in Final Cut Pro as do most professionals and Apple just recently teamed up with Blu-Ray.

Since the majority of stuff in Hollywood is done on Apple computers IMHO that spells the end to HD DVD

ummmm I think a movie has to be filmed with a high definition camera in order to see Blu Ray or HD's potential.

Im rooting for Blu Ray, cuz I have a PS3 and not a big fan of the 360.

You can actually upconvert to HD and "most" of Hollywood is going digital versus film.

And actually HD may already be obsolete as new 4K is on the horizon and being used
