Best for us tall guys?

Hello all;

I have seen a thread similar to this one a few weeks back but I didn't see any clear definitive answers.

Anyway, I am very tall, 6'8", 115 kgs, and I'm 27 years old. I took Budokan Karate from when I was a kid until my mid-teens but now I've forgotten most of it
I'm a pretty strong hitter, In the few real fights I've been in I knocked out my opponent with a maximum of two hits, but I haven't really fought anyone who is really well trained yet. The thing is when I fight it looks very sloppy, so I want to learn a style that fits my size, I also need something that wont take up too much time. I know I know dedication and all that..... but I have a Family, work, and the gym taking up most of my time as it is.

thai is definately nice for tall guys... the low leg kicks and elbows are great for tall guys..

hmm for grappling let me think.. oh i got it judo :) the big sweeping leg throws and suplexes work really well for tall guys as well

what is offered in your area?

You are 6'8''? wow you can kick the s%^t out of anyone .....

6'8 wow. I'm 6'6. Go with what your strengths are. Alot of tall guys are very uncorrdinated, clumsy, lack timing. These guys make poor strikers. They should stick to grappling type stuff.

Myself, i have excellent timing and corridination. I am a very effective striker.

I also made myself one big, strong mofo. That works also.

u could go with all of the above and just train in shootfighting like bart vale . I actually think tall fighters have a good extended reach when striking. IM not short either but im not 6'8 and find that jabs are a great tool for tall fighters because of reach advantage.

I agree alot of us big guys are a bit clumsy but thankfully not me, I guess it's thanks to years of soccer and B-Ball and the karate I did as a kid.

Judo isn't really my thing, I'm more into the standing stuff, in my part of the planet alot is offered, I think pretty much all styles.

then you are very lucky
where are you California?

I think being 6'8 would hurt you in Judo because fo the Center of Gravity for throws
there are probubly bonus's to it to but that I think would hurt a lot
I always wanted to be really tall!

then i would look to see if there is muy thai in your area and see who the instructors are as well as the other striking styles and see what the classes are like

kane your right that is the biggest disadvantage to being 6 8 is a high center of gravity but most likely at his weight he would not fight many people who play a very fast game and he could use his long arms/legs/reach to keep people at an even greater and the sweeping power of his legs would be great so that is an advantage..

good luck

Tom Hes kind of Light for his Height tho , and anyone with a Decent Shot would have him at thir mercy ... and with all the Wrestling/Judo crosstraining these days ...

Majnoon :
Where do you live ? (city) I have an Extensive list of good Teachers in California . (Actually I have most of North America covered - next , THE WORLD !)

My advice would be muay thai, Your goal shoud be to keep the person away from you because your taller which MT can do but if you ever had a scrapp with a skilled fighter they would know this and try to fight you inside and close. Muay thai is also a good in close style with all of it's knees, elbows and low kicks.

you should definately learn to grapple because anyone with a head on there shoulders would probably prefer to have you in a grappling range then a striking range..

i mean you probably have at least 10-14" reach on anyone.. so a smart fighter would try to close the distance on you ASAP so if you dont know how to grapple all your height and strength will be useless
