I'm not sure why people think Ali was so great. I think it's more myth and urban legend.
eat big said:Any weight class, any era.
Just curious to see what other people think, its obvious in my mind.
eat big said:Sure Rocky Marciano was great. He did finish 49-0. But who did he beat? LaStarza and Joe Louis?. The Heavyweight Division was so weak then. Ali beat Frazier twice, Norton twice. He handed Foreman his ass so Foreman didnt want to fight again. He beat Sonny Liston twice at the age of 22. Plus he came back after three years of not fighting because he was stripped of the right to fight. He was the youngest Heavyweight Champion at the time. He was the first to ever regain it 3 times. And he did this without his prime years. He was unable to fight from age 26 to 29. He won the Olypic Gold in 1960. He's never been beaten by a KO. He won the title a second time, SEVEN years after winning it the first time.
chosen.one said:Good argument. Sugar Ray had 91 straight wins at one point and had 104 KO's in his career. Ali said he was the best fighter he ever saw and was his idol
The Shadow said:Jones Jr in his prime
I also think Hopkins and Ray Leonard is/was special

spongebob said:myth or urban legend, lol.
watch his fights.
eat big said:I think Hopkins will lose to Jermain Taylor. Taylor is nasty. Been watching all his fights that have been televised and he is amazingly fast and accurate. Hopkins is done.
Not many people know this but Hopkins lost his first fight, hard work can pay off.
Breeze said:I like Taylor, he's from my area and he's a good guy in addition to being a hell of a fighter. I also liked Tommy Morrison, he was also a local guy that I knew personally, I hated watching him self destruct, he could have been so much better. Taylor will beat Hopkins
Vicious cycle said:I have and IMHO it's more myth and urban legend. He has my vote for greatest showmen, but that's a far cry from greatest boxer ever.

Ali
Holyfield
I'd love to see a Holyfield Ali fight, both in their primes.
Honorable mention goes to Foreman, he may be a joke nowadays but he was a tank back in the 70's.

eat big said:Thank you! Anyone that says Tyson is oblivious to the fact that Tyson couldnt even get in reach of Ali without being knocked out. Ali was faster and had a longer reach. Tyson cant knock you out unless he's in your face, Ali wouldn't let him get there.
Plus he couldnt beat the best of his era.
Muhammad Ali's comeback was amazing after refusing induction to go to Vietnam. Thrilla in Manilla and the Rumble in the Jungle are the two best fights ever. He shocked the world when he beat Liston to become the youngest Heavyweight Champion ever.

You have your opinion I have mine, don't think he could have KO Ali in his prime, rember the Foreman Ali fight, Foreman beat the shit out of Ali then got his ass handed to him........biteme said:And I pick Marciano over Ali. DId you ever see him fight? Go to the website. Even Ebony magazine calls him the most ferocious man to ever put on a pair of gloves. Hard to argue with his KO percentage and undefeated record. And he beat all the greats. Knocked them out. You will say they were past their prime. So what? He did what he was suppose to do then.
The reason there is a pound for pound is because of him. By far the best pound for pound fighter ever! Henry Armstrong, Pernell Whitaker and Marvin Hagler are up there too.chosen.one said:Sugar Ray Robinson!

little chris said:Marciano, hands down, the man never lost, ever. I believe he was 49-0. When no one can beat you ever that makes you the best. Ali lost 2-3 times, thats not perfection. As for tyson the fucking guy only beat has beens, and never will be's. He struggled with Holyfield and couldn't beat Lewis. He may have had the most devasting punch since Foreman but if you can't beat credible opponents it doesn't mean shit.
RDJ said:I like close range fights, Tyson always gets in close.
little chris said:Tyson had to get in close he was one of the shortest heavyweights at the time. only 5'11"
RDJ said:Tyson wasn't the best, I'll admit that right away. I do however think he was the best to look at, in his days. He was very agressive and had a great punch, I loved watching his fights. Tyson was like a pitbull, always attacking. No dancing around people, just hitting them. I like close range fights, Tyson always gets in close.
He should have retired a long time ago. Now I'm stuck with the images of Tyson being KO'd![]()
I used to box, and I'm a short bastard. When you learn to use head movement while closing the distance between yourself and your opponent, you may have a lot more success. Many taller fighters do not bend at the waist well, so their height advantage works only when you are far enough away from them. Whatever drills you do for stepping toward an opponent, practice those like your life depended on it. You need to be able to move faster forward than he can move backward or sideways.RDJ said:True. I have the same problem in my boxing school. I'm short. So if cannot hit them since I'm out of reach, but they can hit me. If I come closer I can hit them, but that makes me vulnerable because they're all better than me (I'm a beginner). So I got quite a few punches in the face, mostly left hooks when I got too close. But my defence improves and I also gave a few jab/directs. Oh well, my lip is swollen and my left eye got a little smaller but atleast there's progress.
