Bench Shirt questions

Ish

New member
I've been considering getting a bench shirt and was wondering how to measure? Do I go really tight, or do I give myself a bit of room? Any ideas?

ISH-

Im just now getting used to gear(after 2yrs of competing) and am finally getting used to the tighter is better concept of gear. The little poly shirt that I used this weekend was the same one I started with @ 181lbs. Now at 215 I feel its just now really fitting right.

KG18 who was lifting off for me was amazed that 315 wouldnt touch in a poly, so you can see how tight its getting. When I get up to 240 this shirt will be really amazing!

What shirt are you leaning towards at this point?

PS. It was cool meting you this weekend, and I'll shoot you a PM next time I head to Tulsa for a SQ workout.

Later..

Thanks man, nice to meet you also. Let me know when you are heading up there again, and we can train a bit.

Shirt wise, I was just curious where I could start at. I was leaning towards denim, but I'm completely new to shirts, so that might be a bad idea. I was probably going with an Inzer, mostly because I can find them for a decent price. So on my measurements, I need to shoot low and get a nice tight shirt.

Thanks man.

I'd consider saving the denim shirts for 500+ pound bench presses. Until then, I think it's a better idea to start with a single ply poly until you're moving some HEAVY weight and gaining experience in a shirt. As far as sizing, ask around to find out who has your body type and possibly try theirs on. I can say that Titan is in the ballpark on sizing, although it works out alot better when you know exactly what size you want after trying a couple on.

cool, I'm a bit shy of a 500+ bench now :) I was kinda wondering if that was a bit much to start with. I think project has a shirt that is fairly close to my size that he might let me try sometime. Thanks man.

Ish, once we figure out a training day, I'll definitely bring my shirt.

It's a single ply Fury, 44" chest. The arms are going to be the tricky part, but I bet it goes on.

I personally want to try an open-back denim to see if it's easier for me to learn. I still feel like I don't have the hang of the Fury.

Don't waste your time with a poly unless you are going to compete in a fed that doesn't allow denim . Just get a nice Double Denim from Karin Klein, call her and ask her about the specifics. There is no weight restriction (eg. #500+) for denim shirt. We have numerous competitors in the lower weight classes that all use DD. We have 3 700+# benchers at Naz who can make 405 touch. I bench in the low 500s and I can make 315 touch . Half the battle is knowing how to train in your shirt and how to set the shirt up.

As far as sizing, you can to send it back for some alterations if you feel like it doesn't fit properly.

I understand that there's not a restriction or minimum to lift with a denim, but to simply save someone the embarrassment (for lack of a better word), I'd suggest starting with something a little less helpful...unless you're one of those 500-700# benchers. Most importantly, establish a strong base in training before deciding on a shirt.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's most important to get strong(er) before adding something as drastic as a denim or multiple ply shirt. You have to agree that those competitors that are lifting enormous amounts of weights also started as beginners like you and I.

I get alot out of my Fury, and I have been very happy with it. I have been trying to "learn" a double denim, and I think one of the reasons I'm not having as much luck with it is that the weight I'd need to hold to keep it in the proper plane is too much for me. I will keep working on it, but whenever I need a band-aid for my ego, I just throw on my single ply poly and put up some weight; weight I can't even get close to with my 2 layers of denim. :)

I agree 100%

...and then some :)

Hey Spatts and Hannibal , what kind of DD's are you using ? Do you 2 bench flat backed ( westside style ) or arched ?
I wish y'all lived closer to PA because I am sure we ( the Nazareth crew ) could put you well on the road to mastering those shirts in one day. If you are ever even travelling through and have the time to stop up , please drop me an email and we can arrange some training time. The average powerlifter hits a new PR on there first visit with us. You can touch alot less than your max , for sure, I promise.

I've never heard that the Westside lifters bench flat backed. Perhaps not an extreme arch, but you can't be on your traps and be driving with your legs, and still remain flat.

I'm using a Karin's shirt. Believe me, I'd love to hook up with you guys for a day...I'm sure all my [bench] problems would be solved. Fannon commented that I already bench that way, just without the feet tucked (insanely low, elbows in, etc...) I just can't figure out why I get a bigger bench with the tension from arm pit to arm pit, even though I'm benching to my belly button!

It's a mystery. :)

I don't know much about shirts, but I just noticed this when looking at Karin's shirts.
Since you cut it, does that change the feel and help you as a elbows in low bencher?

FRONT VIEW OF THE CLOSED NECK DESIGN
YOU'LL NOTICE THAT THE NECK SITS A LITTLE HIGHER ON THE CHEST. MAKING THIS THE IDEAL SHIRT FOR AN ELBOWS OUT BENCHER!

THIS SHIRT IS ALSO THE RECOMMENDED STYLE FOR THE LIFTER WHO TENDS TO TOUCH THE BAR HIGHER ON THEIR CHEST.
ALSO FOR THE LIFTER WHO MAY TEND TO STAY MORE FLAT-BACKED.

Spatts, I benched with Dave Tate the day after a seminar and thats exactly what he does. Feet in front flat , elbows in, and not on his traps , but with his shoulder blades sunk in, he looks the weight down forces his belly out then he pushes the bar in a straight line from his upper ab. There is that kind of natural pelvic tilt going on but no "forced" arch (ass and traps) like most of us Metal Militia guys use.

please drop me an email if you guys want to set something up.

Big Whitey- Will you be at the meet on 6/7?? I am competing there in the Junior 148's. I am still learning the shirt as well. Do you guys ever pull the shirt off the shoulders on the heavystuff?? I have heard to do this from some and that it is illegal from others.

Bigwhitey, your email is blocked in your profile. :(

On your site, the training seminar date is Sept 14th, but what month is that? If it says, I totally missed it. The next month with a 14th on a Sun is September. Is that right? So there will be shirt work, and then also deadlift work with Bob? After what he did for my squat, I'd love to get his deadlift tips!

trust the nazareth barbell boys......im 17 years old 160 pounds
at the ipa nationals on november 17th i barely got 240 with a single poly....so i talked to big mike and he said i could come up and train......so just a few weeks before the beast of the bench he had me doing doubles til i missed with my inzer double denim..he got my shirt workin so well.....i did 245-3 255-1.....next week did 255-3 265-2 then 275-3 so febuary 22nd rolled around and i opened with 275 and demolished it so i went to 300 and i was not prepared mentally for 300 and missed the lockout and was upset ......so i trained my ass off in the gym and began doing lots of boards and lockouts.....mike set my shirt up like 3 weeks later and i did 305-2.....now i recently bought a karins canvas insert shirt.....will not be using it til after june 7th meet in nazareth.......

IRBD : I'll be benching on at the 6/7 meet. It should be slammin , at least 2 guys are going to be shooting for 800+.
We don't pull our shirts that far down (off the shoulder) but we do adjust the support zone based on what we are training with.

ps. Kris is a great example of how there are no weight limitations (500+) on using a DD shirt. And his setup is textbook perfect.... now if he would just shave his head .....

I'm not shaving my head, but I'm up for the rest! I wish I could do this BEFORE my next meet, which is in early August.

Denim is a great way to go i have girls that bench in the high 200's and low 300's and wear denim. By starting with poly all your going to do is make the transition to denim that much harder. There is no reason whatsoever for you to not start with denim.

I started with a single poly and worked up to high 200's low 300's, and now I'm having to relearn a shirt. I don't know if I would've done anything differently. From what I've heard, even people that get a new DD, after always using one, still have to relearn it...break it in again. I'm hoping I get alot more than 300 out of the DD. :)
