Bench PR 515x1 shirted
good news it was a PR bad news i was out of the groove on all my sets this week..Bar speed was nill with the same weight from a week ago..
need to practice i know i have an easy mid 5 bench right now..

also sorry no vid damn camera died because someone forgot to charge it (me lol)

awesome...the most I've ever seen anybody bench in person is 435...nobody real hardcore at my gym tho

just curious how does a bench shirt benefit you? I mean...what does it do exactly?

can't wait to see a vid

thnks man..i posted video last week of me doing 495..im not sure if the link will still work though..
this is a quote from Lattimer (natty bench press champ)

"Bench shirts were originally brought to the market as a protective device, much like a lifting belt. The original shirts were a tight polyester material that helped protect the shoulders and pectorals during heavy benching, such as during a competition. Somewhere in the 1980's, lifters discovered that these bench shirts also could be used to provide an increase in the weight a lifter could move.

While the use of bench shirts has been hotly debated on the Internet, it is a fact that the majority of lifters use them. In particular, the vast majority of elite and famous lifters use some form of bench shirt. Today's shirts are highly evolved, purpose built garments designed with the intent of lifting more weight. While some powerlifters take offense to this, and feel that the purity of Powerlifting is negatively effected by bench shirts, it is very clear that the shirts are here to stay and have been solidly ingrained in the sport."

Congrats man!!! My best is at 385 and thats all i am doing, everything started to break down, I am just not built for big weight on bench.

What type shirt?

Was that with a pause?

Metal Viking

i practice comp benching no sense in doing something that wont be legal in order to bench a certain weight

Great job - you had a recent squat PR too as I recall (600 range?). More impressive that you've been out of groove all week. Where is your dead in relation to your other lifts? Looking at your "location" under your avatar I see 800,600,600 so I'm guessing this is the week area in your arsenal?

The one thing I've never been crazy about in WSB is their aversion to pulling from the floor. I can understand them wanting to avoid the dead due to CNS for their elite lifters (as I understand it Simmons has relaxed his DL aversion in recent years) but it's like they refuse to use any of the Olympic lifts as a supplement. I've heard Louie quote the Bill Starr article about 'Increasing the Deadlift by Not Deadlifting' but that whole article is written with a ton of OL pulling as Starr was an Olympic lifter and stressed high pulls, cleans, power shrugs, and good mornings - Simmons seemed to take the last one and run with it. His aversion to using OL assistance lifts over the years has had me baffled to the point where I'm ready to just call him up on the phone. They are less demanding on recovery being primarily concentric only, help build speed and acceleration, follow nearly the same bar path (nothing else does), and transfer incredibly well to the movement - seemingly all of Louie's favorite things. He's made some quotes about heavier OL's being no faster than a DL but that's simply and obviously untrue as no lifter could beat the bar down if there wasn't some dramatic acceleration in the second pull (this has also been examined and proven so not just my example). Anyway - just my rant that I've been holding inside for over a decade. It seems like common sense stuff to me and I have learned a ton from him over the years but I just can't seem to make logical sense out of his stance on this aspect of training. Had to get that off my chest. If you can shed any light it would be appreciated as I've never heard a good answer from him or anyone else. - back on topic.

I recall reading a post from Lattimer on Fortified Iron regarding the differential between his raw and equipped bench. He's someone who has certainly mastered the shirt, from what I recall I don't believe too many lifters can get as much out of it (absolute or relative % of raw) as he does.

you hit the nail on the head right there..
my best dead is 550 no belt no straps back when i knew shit about lifting..well ive done the WSB "no pulling" thing and it seriously fucked with my groove...
i honestly have no idea where my dead is at the moment for more than one reason..after reaching my PR there i seemed to relax on pulling heavy instead i focused on doing things like block pulls for sets of 5 one week and GM's or rack work the following..also my family has had bad backs and my brother has 3 herniations (not lifting related) but it platyed on my mind andi backed off from pulling heavy..i would hit some speed work once in awhile..

Well all i ahve to say is for me it doesnt work i need to pull so someone with the same problem suggested doing 1 work set of 5 on DE SQ/DL day..im not afraid to admit my form had become rediculously horrible from not pulling as well lost confidence from going to heavy out of the groove and tweaking the back a few times..

My solution: i started 2 weeks ago pulling..i started with 275 my plan is to just add 20 lbs per week to the bar to get me back to respectable weight.. with the lighter wieghts i hit more like 8-10 reps all with a reset no toch and go..i feel better already..but i learned a lesson i need to pull. speed work with bands, sumo style, etc the rack does nothng for me..Besides looking at the logs over on EFS they all do full pulls most of the time

Well, I think you are definitely going about it the right way. Pulling a lot - regardless of weight - will get your confidence and technique back. Supplement that with some heavy work after you are ready and build your confidence in handling some bigger weight. From your lifts, you have a big dead just waiting to be let out of the cage. Get that puppy in shape and let it rip. To me, there are few things more satisfying in the gym than locking out a heavy DL.

This is an excerpt from the Bill Starr article. The whole thing was reprinted in PLUSA in the mid 1990s but I lost my copy and I haven't been able to locate another. It included a complete program for rotating among the lifts. If you can get it, supplementing in some high pulls and other work drives the dead up nicely without subjecting your CNS to deadlift overload and more importantly - you are still pulling from the floor and dramatically accelerating the weight in the 2nd pull. http://www.americanpowerliftevolution.net/New Folder 1969/dlapproach1.html

thnx madcow-

What kind of bench routine do you use? Bench 1-2-3 times a week? Do you do board presses, narrow grip presses, etc?

Pretty much WSB routine..but im experimenting with combining metal militia with WSB..
typically though i do lots of board work with a close grip (pinky inside the ring) working up to a 1rm or 3rm ten more heavy tricep work

On DE day i do speed bench with bands plus hit the tris again but with not as much volume and some shoulder work..
lats get hit 3 times per week..

heres what i did yesterday and this would be my ME day
