Becoming a Personal Trainer

Hi girls,

I've seen several of you on here post about getting a personal training certification. I am currently in the middle of changing careers for personal reasons and am very interested in doing personal training. I realize it is definitely beneficial to have a degree, but has anyone done an online training to become a personal trainer? Granted, I realize that you cannot get ACE certified this way and going back to school for a degree is optimal, but how would an online course be for the short term? Thanks for all your help!

If you are interested in working at an established gym I'd start by asking what they require - sometimes "anything" is sufficient. One of the options available is NESTA. A big part of it is your "sales ability" and presentation skills, but definitely look at what are the "requirements" and start from there. I almost started working at Bally's in Minneapolis -- they had a 2 week program for their own trainers. I wasn't able to complete it because of my "day job" work schedule so never finished the whole thing. But get the "real scoop" so you do know specifically what is needed.

:verygood:

BTW - NESTA is a cert that you can send away for all the stuff & you don't have to renew it once you complete & pass the test.

Im trsined through my job also....to me I would NEVER want to do it as a career...Maybe just on the side....

Thanks girls. I'm going to try NESTA and see how it goes. Was originally planning to do it as a new career because I was going to leave my old job for issues related to the person I was dating. Well, that person just broke up with me today. :finger: Now I may have time to just do it on the side and then think of a career change. The possibilities are endless now...

Oh wow.
I remember the thread you posted about that situation.
I'm sorry things didn't work out.

But don't forget sometimes that pile of dirt your facing isn't just dirt - it's a dirt ramp that you can use to springboard yourself off to a better place.

Thanks Vel! Guess I'm glad I found out now than another 7 months down the road. Returning his stuff in a few hours and trying to be very calm and cool about it. And hope in return he's miserable as hell... Bad news - gotta face him at work now every single day. :fistfullo

Not dealing with it too well at all right now. Not after vacations with him and the kids, weekends spent with all of his family, making future marriage plans. Unfortunately he's a depressive personality that goes through these "freak out" episodes. He'll regret it in a few days but I'll be long gone and on my way to better things by then. I deserve sooooo much better.

I can now throw myself into PT certification, a comp in May, probably a new log here soon and get myself into awesome shape so he can see what he let walk away.

In the meantime I have training in Philly this weekend that'll hopefully take my mind off his sorry a$$... :die: Thanks Rooney - I know you went through the same thing and survived so I will too. :bigkiss: Just fighting the urge to smoke a cigarette (my vice when I'm depressed!).

You WILL survive...Don't ever doubt yourself!!!:rose:

I sent you a PM, but if your schedule is open when you're in Philly, drop me a line and we can bash a$$holes together over coffee :FRlol:

Time heals things, sometimes faster when what you are leaving behind isn't moving you forward. The worst part is the familiarity of it all & what were future plans -- but now you get to explore your personal goals -- and like they say - when one door closes, another opens :)

:bigkiss:

SBT - thanks for the gorgeous pic. Tried to give you some k but it wouldn't let me.

Roony - pm received and sent. Would love to meet for coffee! :coffee:

Sassy - You're wonderful gal, and I know you speak from experience with all your going through!

Hang in there, Girl! Focus on YOU!!!

Thanks SG - the focus is now ENTIRELY on me! Things are awful right now and I gave into the cigarette urge. :rasta: But, now that I've hit bottom I can only climb out.

Next order of business: to find a trainer to prepare me for a comp. And then become one myself so I can get as far away from him as possible... :finger: :chainsaw:
