Arnold has bad squat form.

This is what arnold wrote in Widers magazine about his squats and explained that he did half squats and other varieties for better shape and cuts..

The full squat, all the way down and all the way up, has the advantage of working a lot of other body parts besides the thighs; like back, glutes and chest. They certainly developed the lumbar muscles of my lower back, That was a terrific advantage. The disadvantage was that 50 percent of the effort worked my thighs, and at least 30 percent worked my glutes. I found that the first third of the movement of coming up from a full squat worked my glutes. The final two-thirds of the movement worked the entire thigh, but no particular part. So, what happened was my rear got big, and my thighs got bulky and shapeless. Nether of these two effects served my purpose for bodybuilding.

So you prefer stressing the knee joint by using it as an eccentric brake?

if one is aware of their form and conscious of their rep cadence and speed,
I would honestly say that My version of sqauting is Much safer and more effective then your full squats

every project member hase never gone back once they find out the way I train legs

I do both squats to parallel then ass to heal squats .

Doing to parallel or just above like omega mentions really works the shit out of the thighs.

Going deep really works more of your ass.
We all saw what happened to Tom plats sure he had huge thighs but if you look at him from behind at a distance he also had one of the biggest asses on stage.

As for arnold's squats .Arnold just broke his leg 9 months before the movie was shot. Arnold was guest posing and a platform fell apart on stage and arnold took a masive fall and broke his femur.
This explains why arnolds legs looked great in 1974 but then for 1975 were lagging behind bit.

many guys have no idea what a squat is or even how to do one, or the variations.I actually seen alot of guys almost combine a good morning and a squat together. luanching up with their ass and throwing their lower back into a arch to try and get the weight up.
Squats are a excersize that can be done many way or variations Everyone is different .
For me front squats work the best for quads isolation ,but reg squats are great for building over all strenght

reg squats bodybuilder style (isolation)
squats powerlifter style(more of a full body movement)
board under heel squats
closed legged squats (legs held close to togther)
wide stance squats
sumo stance squats(wider stance toes out)
front squats
overhead squats
hack squats
sissy squats
olympic quats
chained squats
dumbell squats
plie squat
on legged squat
wall squats
chair squats
hinu squats

Arnold was prob just burning out his quads . In his book I rember him explaining the diff types of squats or atleast half a dozen of them.
then explaining how to do each

heh! this is crap! arnie doing half squats without a box would explain why he was squatting 3 plates.... that's half ass for a Mr O legend innit?

This commentary by Arnold was well thought out and makes perfect sense. Too many people blindly follow tradition, and too many people are fixated on doing very deep squats to the detriment of their physiques.

People who concentrate on deep squats all day often end up with tree-trunks for legs and huge asses. Often their hamstrings look too small in comparison to the size of their ass and quads.

I've noticed a lot of professional bodybuilders these days don't concentrate on barbell back squats. They may do them, but it's only an additional exercise rather than the main part of their quad workout.
