Army Combatives

Anyone on here ever train on the Army Combatives system? Basically, the Army has adopted a heavily stripped down version of BJJ. Everything above the basics depends on your instructor. It's definetly on as good as the effort you put in.

I'm lucky enough to train with a Judo expert.

Yup, I was in the Army at Ft. Benning for 3 years. SFC Larsen went down to Brazil, learned BJJ, and brought it back up here. It's pretty big with the Ranger Batts. I got to attend the first phase.....there's still 3 phases right? The 1st phase is basic BJJ, 2nd phase encorporates more striking, and the 3rd phase is mostly striking with weapons training.

Their BJJ is really mixed in with a "Sambo-like" style IMO. Their pride fighter, Damien Stelly (not sure about spelling) was a world Sambo contender. They teach leg locks, knee bars, & ankle locks right off the bat.

The test at the end of the first phase includes achieving the clinch with someone with boxing gloves on. You can't hit them, but they can knock the shit out of you. It's fun getting your head rocked a little.

SFC Larsen still running things down there? Watch out for Damien Stelly, he's their champ down there.

Have fun! Karma out to you, brother.

Currently, Level 1 & 2 are taught at the individual posts. I'm trying to get into Level 1 right now. I'd like to work up to Level 3, which is 4 weeks at Bennning. I hear the end of each week is basically a tough man contest.

I've always wanted to take BJJ but there is no way I can do that at a BJJ gym right now. I already do PT 5 x week (combatives is 2 of those) and the gym 2-3 days. My body and/or my family just couldn't hold up to the extra effort.

I plan on learning as much as I can from the Army as well as reading the books and practicing the techniques with my partners.

Good to hear it! It all depends on you though.....on how far you want to take it. If you just want to become a better soldier, taking the 1st phase will improve you by leaps and bounds. The second and third phase won't help you in that area as much, but it will make you a better trained MMA fighter. Remember: "If you find yourself fighting someone overseas in a hand to hand situation, you're not fighting to win....you're fighting to hold them off long enough until your buddie comes over and helps you out."

That's what they teach you in the first phase, lol. Silly statement, but true.

If you want to get serious, you need to transfer to Ft. Benning (that's where's it at), and get into the 11th Regiment (that's where the main brain is). Even try going through RIP and getting into 3rd RGR....that's what I did, they love sending people to that course.

Books will only get you so far, getting on those mats and training is where the learning comes from. Good luck, man!
