Anyone with herniated disc experience?

I know Beast had some back issues. I am afraid I may have something along those lines. My PT echoes that. I have a constant "tingling" sensation going down the back of my hammies and calves, especially at night when I lie down (have to move my legs for about 5 minutes til it stops). I am bummed beyond belief - maybe I need to reevaluate my training and give the fuck up

I crushed a disk when I was younger. Most of the time I am fine but once in a while it slips around a bit. You just need to lay off of it until you can get the herniation under control. Unforetuneately sometimes this will require surgery and a long recovery. Check into steriod/anti-inflammatory site injections from the doc. As long as you don't do any damage to the cord you should be able to get back to lifting.

Cheers,

I have 2 in the low back. I was diagnosed with them a little over a year ago. Combination of contact sport, extremely tight hamstrings, lifting, and genetic predisposition(will go into this more if people don't believe me).

One is extremely small and I get barely any pain from, the other was rather large but has shrunk down quite a bit since the initial injury.

It seems like the pain you are experiencing is consistent with some sort of sciatic problem, though just tingling doesn't indicate a herniation. A disc or two might be buldging in your low back, which will obviously put pressure on the nerve.

Get a MRI and go from there. If it is indeed herniated there are lots of options to go about including the epidural shots, which tend to work well.

Good luck bro

thanks for the input bro. I don't know much about herniated disks and the associated "feelings" you get when you have one. I do not consider myself yo be in any major pain though. Some discomfort in the lower back - but the tingling in my legs (not really pain, almost pins-and-needles like) is starting to worry me. I am going to go to an ortho and see what he says. Probably get an MRI

Good advice from InTraining!! See the doc before its too late!! I started with the same pain and tingling sensation right down through my toes, then one day walking around Costco with the wife the back gave out and could barely climb back into my truck to go directly to the docs.

Mine is a bit dif from most as I was diagnosed with Chronic Degenerative Disc Disease...(very little fluid left in any of my discs) major pain was when one tore on me. Ended the MRI results with L1, L2, L3, T1, T2, & T3 herniated and L4 had a tear in it. My muscles and Core have to support my back now and I do have to live with it the rest of my life...but do not suggest the shots!! Had the epideral along with a series of steroid shots and will never do them again!!!

Doing the Core Performance program is helping a bunch and still Killin' some major shit!! Best shape of my life now & will be 37 next month

Are you getting the hamstring stretches in? Tight hammies can disrupt the whole posterior chain. I used to get a tingling feeling a lot sometimes just from standing still and wouldn't squat since it would hit me as I started the movement. It'd also get me if I tried to jump at all. One day the chiro suggested hamstring stretches and that's one symptom which just went away. I don't have herniated discs, though. Keep with the core performance.

when this fuck shot me, he shattered my T5. i had tingling in my legs for months. it went away, though, with no additional surgery. try adjusting your back, like sleep or lie flat on your back with no pillow and see if that helps. i'd lie like that and shit would shift around and i'd feel better afterwards.

Thanks for all the eplies peeps. As I said, I don't have much experience with disc problems, so the next statement may mean nothing, but I don't feel like I am in the situation where I need a shot or even surgery. It's the tingling in the legs that worries me. I am in the second week of the Core Performance training and am hoping that program helps. We'll see. I'll get an MRI anyway though.

I have mine in the lower neck from my car accident in '01. It bothers me from time to time when I push too hard in the gym or don't stretch to keep the neck muscles in balance. It will never be the same but there is a risk of rupture in the weakened area. After a rupture, surgery to fuse it will limit the range of motion you will have.

Be careful on the big lifts.

I herniated one of mine a few years back. I'm fine now. Find a good chiropractor (you may have to try a few out) and get an MRI. Then take some time off and heal. Time off sucks, but you have to do it or you just prolong a return to 100%

if all you are is experiencing a tingling in your leg it is probably from a pinched nerve which can be caused by a herniated disc.. i fractured 2 of my upper verts and herniated one and it was the most painful thing that's ever happened to me.. i was paralyzed for 3 days and went through intense PT, im sure my pain was due to the fractures not hernated disc though ;) but mine will slide out of place every once in awhile and ocassionaly pinch a nerve and ill get those tingling feelings from my hammy to my toes.. found a really good chiropractor (went to 5 before this one) that fixes it everytime in one pop! :rainbow:

Are you sure it's not a pinched nerve?

it may well be a pinched nerve, and seems like it would be. like I said, it is definitely not extremely painful or anything along those lines - just very weird with the legs tingling a lot and kind of going numb for a second or 2 at random times.

thanks bro. just want to find out for sure what the deal is so I can make a plan of action.

always rather be safe then sorry, good luck and keep us posted! :)

I'm not a doc but it doesn't sound like a herniation to me either. I would like to add though- the first day you feel 100% again, don't come back and hit the weights hard again. Take an additional week off and start back light. I jumped right back into a regular workout the first day I felt better and when later that day the pain started coming back and by morning I was a cripple again.

I have had the same problem you are talking about. i staarted going to chiropractor for a while and helped very little. had mri done and fould disc between l4 and l5 squashed and piece of the disc broke off and went into spinal column. went to a sports medicine dr. and found out about a procedure called VAX-D. had this done to me 6 yrs. ago and have had no problems since. it is not a surgery, more similar to controled traction therapy. only took 24 days. of this to have me pain free.
