I just bought a mac air and have some questions/need advice.

is there an easy way to scroll? my touchpad makes me use the scroll bar, am I just fucked here?

when I log into hotmail have have to log off to get back in again. My favorites doesn't refresh the page with new log ins. Anything I can do?

any software I should be picking up, cool stuff?

What about on my Iphone, any good ad ons there?

the mac is wack

I have a PC desktop and a 17 inch laptop but wanted something light to travel with. The Air is sweet for that so I picked it up but still am getting used to the differences. Some things are way better but other things are taking some getting use to.

LOL, nothing like letting the Pops down!

Call him and ask him my questions, I'll help bring the family together!lol

I'm no expert and I don't have a laptop I have a mac desktop, so no touch pad. However I think that if you use 2 fingers it should scroll. Although it may take a few days, you will get use to everything on the mac and come to appreciate OSX's superiority over windows.

He probably cries every night before he goes to bed. I see an intervention needed.

The new Macs have a "two finger scroll" function that's supposed to be pretty cool. Mine doesn't have it, so I won't stick my neck out giving you advice on it other than to read the pamphlet they give you as a manual, and Google around. There's probably all sorts of little Easter Egg goodies hidden away. (That feature probably wants to "talk" to the scroll bar in whatever program it is you're using, though.)

Hotmail is going to try to screw with anyone who isn't using Internet Exploder. That's not the Mac's fault.

I'd love to have a mac. For now, only "mac" Donald's :(

Use two fingers simultaneously to scroll vertically and horizontally.

Use three fingers simultaneously to go backwards and forwards in Safari (and I think Firefox? I don't use it so can't vouch for that one).

I've gotten accustomed to the quick scrolling on my Mac, and I can't stand it when I have to use my work laptop.

I don't own a Ipod
Dell jukebox mthafugga

I don't do the mac computer trend either

That's it, I knew there had to be a feature to do that. Life is better today, thanks.

Awesome, what is this three finger scrolling part though? Do you mean to other windows or back a page on the same window?

Edit: Never mind, I got it. Thanks, that shit is easy and now I'm flying through pages and scrolling up and down. The airbook is great for travel. Do you have any other mac advice? I guess I should start reading mac magazines.

I thought they were cool in the 80's when I was in elementary/middle school.
They are still not bad OS/Hardware, just way over priced for what you get. Also now they using an intel platform nothing really special about them.

Idiots will claim they do art and music better but thats why they are idiots. Macs schedule the video, sound processes with a higher priority but this does not really make them better

They are better for surfing IMO. Just these features talked about in this thread make them better at that. Also I have a time machine hard drive in the house that works as my wireless router. All the computers in my house can connect to it and use it like a server wirelessly. I also run my stereo off the express so you can wirelessly hook to my tera hard drive, access music and play it on my centralized stereo system from any computer anywhere. This was all set up in a couple of minutes, that is why I like mac. They just give me usable products.

I have an htpc, it is a PC running an Intel core 2 chip, asus mobo. I have the digital optical audio going to my surround sound. I also have a HD graphics card going to HDTV..

I would say macs can be better for surfing the net because their are less virus written for mac. But a mac can still pic up a windows virus and infect other windows machines on your LAN or people you email.

I looked hard into going that way before I bought the mac. I just don't play games so there was no advantage to me for the HTPC. I was able to do everything I needed to do this way with the wireless mac/server setup for music and a PS3 for bluray. I pretty much feel like I have the ultimate setup for my needs right now. I have this ultra portable mac, the wireless music in the home feature, a tera hard drive, three PC's strategically placed around the house for convenience and a home theater. I wouldn't want to run just a mac but this set up is working great for me.

I'm just learning the mac now though.

Are you using Safari, Firefox or IE for mac for browsing? I am by no means a mac guru but most things developed to run in IE and Firefox do not work correctly for IE on the mac, stick with Firefox and Safari.

Ha, they'll probably think I'm a dork instead.

Other recs for your MacBook is to never turn it off. Simply close the lid and put it to sleep. Saves time when you need it.

On my PC's I run Firefox 3.0 but haven't put it on my mac yet. Do you advise running firefox over Safari on mac?

I have to admit that running Time capsule as a router with an express to my stereo is one of my favorite all time tech improvements. I have all my music on my time capsule which is accessible by any computer in my house. Then as long as my stereo is turned on I can run through Itunes from any computer using my shared library and play it on my home stereo to rock the house from any room.

Though I'm sure my neighbors don't enjoy this feature as much as I do but being out on my balcony hanging out and controlling my stereo is tech that has been long overdue.

Do a search for Mac on the EFs search engine... There was an excellent thread posted by someone , I think it was Digger that went through the differences of Macs and Pcs.... great information that should answer your question.. Im not sure who posted it however I know Digger knows alot about computers... Good luck

Not necessarily one over the other, but if something doesn't seem to be working right on the internet in Safari, test it in Firefox to see if it does the same thing.

Most website development takes into consideration IE, Firefox, and Netscape for the PC; and Safari and Firefox on the Mac. If a browser is considered "unsupported" by a website, such as IE on Mac for certain sites, that doesn't mean it won't work. It means it might work for you until they make some sort of an update to the site and then IE starts to show some sort of weird anomaly, while Firefox and Safari work fine.

Make sense?

My point is have both for troubleshooting purposes.

I'll search for the thread, there is a lot to learn but I am liking what I have found so far. It seems the new Iphone is a lot better now also.

Mac has done a really nice job of taking what was once a nerd/techie environment like setting up a wired/wireless home entertainment and making it sleek and simple.

If my parents (who are in their 60's) ever said I want to have streaming video and music going to our TV and stereo, I'd tell them to get a Mac and they could set it up themselves. PC"s are still laborious
