Anyone here have an M.B.A.??

beastboy...I have my MBA. It is worth it if you want to work in the corporate world or consulting firms etc. If you are going to start your own business, you may find it useful or not depending on the type of business. In contrast to Mattskywalker, I feel that education is always worthwhile. It can never hurt and it very possibly might give you an advantage that will help. I am not sure why skywalker is so anit-MBA, but don't take my word or his for it. Just look at data on the salary differences of people with MBA's versus those without. Also, check out the educational credentials of most high level execs. and then make up your own mind about how valuble it is. As for the GMAT if you have an engineering background the math section will probably be very easy. As for the verbal section I don't know how adept you are in this area but I am sure you will do well. If you are worried just take one of the prep courses. 450 should be very easy to score if you have any brains at all:D . Since you have a family and work I would recommend taking 2 classes a semester, unless you feel you can comfortably handle more. Hope this helped. Good luck.

It can hurt. Loss of time is a real cost. But in principle I agree.

On average, salaries are higher with an MBA. Are you average? Do you need a crutch? That stat is just as skewed as saying Gates, Dell and Ellison are all college dropouts, so I should drop out. Too much school will diminish your ability to think independently, and it will destroy your initiative.

I have 11 attorneys that work for me, and they just don;t do any independent thinking. Some from top law schools, some from more modest schools. Interesting, that I (with an undergrad degree) have been hired as their strategic advisor.

If you want to jump ahead in the rat race, MBA is the way to go. If you want to start your own thing (I have done that, too) don't bother with it.

I got one thru night study. Curriculum at most schools includes Managerial Accounting
Business Law
Macro Economics
Marketing Strategy
Logistics
Automation
Mathematical Analysis

and some electives like Interntional Biz, More Computer type stuff, etc.

My understanding is that having an MBA is a plus for executives and for job-hunting, but it doesn't matter where you got it from unless you went to a top 10 Business School.

I'll find out when I retire from the Army in a few years...

Personally, I have found that having my MBA takes precedence over my other accreditations in the business world. It has worked well for me as people always seem impressed when you have an MBA and appear to give your opinion more weight. I can truly say that I learned tons more while earning my MBA than when doing my BA although it was a shorter term. So, I would definitely recommend going for it.

Also, when I was earning my MBA, it was during the last recession & there were numerous engineers who were out of work in my classes looking to branch out into the business world. All of them seemed to perform quite well in business school, so I doubt you'd have any difficulties. You've just got to be able to find a balance between school & home life. Now, that's the tough part.

Beastboy, what school are you looking at (I'm in Michigan too)? I had an Engineering undergrad and the GMAT was no problem, scoring 450 will be a joke. If your employer is paying, I say go for it. If you are paying, it depends on your career goals, your finances, etc.

Most of the "go getters" at work have Masters degrees, but not all the people with Masters degrees are "go getters", if that makes any sense. We have a lot of dipshits with advanced degrees.

Matt, I basically agree with that. I know people who havn't finished high school who have made a lot of money. But I also feel that it definitely cannot hurt and will probably open doors that may otherwise have been closed.

I haven't really decided on a school yet, do you have any recommendations. My employer will pay for some which is good, but my biggest problem is just balancing everything.

Thanks for the advice....I'm really looking into it because I want to open up other options..especially since the bottom has fallen out of the engineering field.

if you get your mba from a top school you'll definetly learn some good skills, that weren't taught in undergrad...i'm now getting my MBA and its a joke, i haven't learned anything new except how to understand broken english better from the foreign students..450 should be easy to get, i'm not to smart and got a 600:D
