Anyone have experience with epileptic dogs?

my buddy's dog was epileptic - they think she got it from eating rat poison or something similar.

They had her on medication and she got really lethargic and somewhat fat. It also wanted to eat everything in sight.

hiya. i counsel people on epilepsy, and while your dog might know when its coming on and get/look really scared, be assured that while freaky, fits generally arent painful to experience. just be nearby and comfort your dog, theyll love you for it. which is good, because theres not a lot to do about it. if it werent for the whole "fits while driving" issue, i probably wouldnt care too much if people were on epilepsy drugs or not. it looks terrible but really, isnt that bad.

most people see a fit and freak themselves. try not to. its just another part of life. settling in and dealing with it is the way to go for everybody.

dog is cute by the way :)

Depends on the dog though, one of my brothers dogs has them and if you're too close when she comes out of it she'll bite you. Its because when its over and she comes too she's freaked out by the whole experience and doesn't know whats going on or who to trust. Being too close to her as she snaps out of it she'll think you may have done it to her. My brother stays in the room when it happens, but about 10 feet away and just talks to her until she realizes nobody is trying to hurt her.

I found some information that says there might be a link between diet and the attacks. It is believed that some preservatives are being linked to seizures. The problem is almost all dog food / treats have these preservatives. Now I have to look around and find a high quality, organic kibble that she will eat.

The vet believes that the seizures that my little dog has been having is the onset of epilepsy. I have been doing a ton of research about it, but I would like to hear from people that have actually had to deal with a pet with epilepsy, and their experiences.

My friend has a dog with epilepsy - has for 8 years - I think the dog takes pills for them I can't recall. He does pretty good, he does have seizures from time to time but he has a full and happy life.

I'll ask her and try and get more info.
