Anybody Familiar with Portland, Oregon?

I Told You So ...

What's it like? Climate? (I've heard temperate) Culture? (I've heard eclectic and a little eccentric and very green) Mosquitoes? (I've heard they're a problem).

As you can see, I'm operating from a LOT of 2nd, 3rd and so forth impressions. I'd like something a tad more personal :D

culture is whacky libtard type stuff
As you well know, perfect for hubby and I, which is one of the appeals.

We wish to find more of our own kind :twirl:

BillFred, do you mean it rains a lot or ask PuddleMonkey?

then have at it and have fun lol
Time. We've been in the planning stages on this for a long time, it's going to be a huge move. We're trying to narrow the geographic location down long distance. This summer we tried S. Carolina and that's out. Virginia coast is still in the running.

This is a move that won't take place before 2013.

Pudmonk lives in Portland, Oregon

puds actually lives just across the Columbia River in Washington.

My wife's parents live in Vancouver, WA, and her sister lives in Portland. One of my best friends for over 20 years lives in Portland. I used to live in Seattle/Tacoma area.

Portland's weather is pretty much 9 months of rain and 3 months of sun. We go to Portland 1-2 times a year (getting ready to go again in a little over a week), and during the summer I usually enjoy it. A quick trip an hour east to Hood River during the earlier or later "summer" months will give you a little more sun and warmth. We were last there in June and spent about 5 days in Portland/Vancouver (rained every day), and 3 days in hood River (warm and sunny).

As for culture...well it's different than San Diego. Portland has a lot of bikers (surprisingly). People ride their bikes to work and for recreation. Most everywhere is pretty dog friendly. Lots of parks and trails. MM I think you'd probably enjoy it.

Actually it doesnt rain here as much as people think it does, we had wet june this year but that was an exception. 6-7 months of rain every year is more like it.. winters are cold n wet but it doesnt go below 32degrees that often. summers are awesome and it rarely gets above 95. and NO humidity.
You're an hour from the beach, the mountains, hiking, and skiing. or a couple hours frrom the high desert of eastern oregon. lots of bicyclist, coffee shops, microbrews and liberals.

I wanna go, I wanna go. Bikers, you mean bicyclists!? Hot damn.

Okay, I got the credit card points, husband and I are thinking a vacation there next year. Any advice on when's the best time to visit? Places to see?

lol, best time to visit is August. Best weather month. Plenty to see and do around the area. like dutchman said, ocean, mountains, hiking, biking, etc.

Yes, bicyclists.

I may very well do that. Portland 11 months from now. With my shitty travel points I better start planning now :lmao:

I'm all about the nature. The ocean and mountains within an hour or so of each other is incredibly attractive.

AND NO HUMIDITY!

Fuck Pennsylvania.

Now for the $64 question: How do you get 6 cats across the United States?!

Can't take the Northeast anymore?
I'm done with the Delaware Valley, no matter what. I've told my husband I refuse to die here. I hate this region. 45 years here and I never liked it all that much to begin with. Overpriced, overtaxed, overpopulated, over developed, HOT AS SHIT in the summer COLD AS FUCK in the winter. I'll never understand why anyone would live here willingly.

6 small crates?
Actually I was thinking crates large enough to accomodate a very small litter pan, so maybe medium dog sized? But yeah, six crates in a car for at least five days :worried: I'm figuring we can hopscotch from Motel 6 to Motel 6. Flying is out of the question, it would cost a fortune and that's before the vet bill. I'm not shipping my cats as cargo, a couple of them are over 10 now, it would frigging kill them.

Jesus, I'm gonna need a case of Bach's Rescue Remedy. This sounds cold but if any of them are planning on dying in the next five years I hope they get on with it sooner rather than later.

1 medium sized crate?

The NW is pretty awesmoe, specially if you don't like too many right wingnuts, although we get plenty of those too.

Low humidity, not really that much rain, but A LOT of days with gray skies.

portland is a quirky big-small town.
you'd proly dig it.
things to see:
-farmers market on sat
-mt.hood
-downtown.
-titty bars galore
-hanging out in coffee houses and catching live music,
a plethora of both

Never in a million years. I wouldn't even put TWO of them in a crate together, never mind all six. It would be like one of those Warner Brothers cartoons with the box jumping across the floor, cat screams and tornado effects with the occasional paw flying out.

We're definitely checking out the PNW next year, it's on like Donkey Kong :lmao:

Now before y'all leave this thread, my husband heard that mosquitos were a big problem out in Portland? Any opinions? This is a HUGE issue for me, I'm to mosquitos what the Road Runner was to the Coyote (in keeping with the Warner Bros. metaphors).

They might be a problem out in the suburbs where the rivers and creeks are like on farms and shit, but i've lived 5 miles from downtown for 20 years and never been bitten

parks everywhere.. people and animal

any traffic problems are directly related to our Asian population

as with any city stay away from MLK Blvd and you'll be fine

we're serious about our pets here

even my grinch ass is active with the humane society and paws and claws

ok, the 9 months of "fall" when it's not raining, it's just gray. Overcast, dark clouds, miserable. But, you might like it! :)

yeah, no thanks.

I traded an average annual temp of 57 degrees with over 300 days of gloom/yr for an average annual temp of 75 degrees and over 300 days of sunshine/yr.

Couldn't be happier! :D

we hit 87 today and it'll be mid 80's again tomorrow

you can keep that shit

I love 55 and cloudy!

grim FTW!!!

Okay, the bat and the bag was funny, the grinder and the bucket a little less so because I've done animal rescue for so long and heard stories that were horrifying ...

As for gray and temperate ... see, due to the unbearable humidity (to me) this summer I've basically been chained inside the house since uh, June 1. So overcast and mild, with an ecological spirit, respect for bikers (there are NO fucking bike lanes where I live, ZERO, not even shoulders on the road) a liberal mindset and easy access to not only the beach, but the mountains AND desert?! It honestly sounds too good to be true.

Move to Boston, it's just like that only colder, hotter and more expensive! :)

I've visited Mass. More passed through Boston on the way to Salem (witchy mecca and all that). I still thought it was nicer than this region of Pennsylvania, but more $$$??? Uh, fug that.

I actually liked Salem, nice little fishing village feel. But I hear you, a lot of the motivation to move is to cut annual living expenses (ideally, reduce personal taxes and utility use in terms of heat and cooling).

About the cats...do you think that 5 days in a car is worse than a couple hours in a plane? Maybe the vet could give you something to put them to sleep while they fly or something to keep them calm. I know my cats would be very stressed out during a 5 day car ride. Just a thought

move to ct...theres a house up my road for sale...don't ride a motorcycle here tho....
