Any gun enthusiasts here?

I'm looking to buy a hand gun for home protection. Nothing fancy, just something that will do the job.

I was thinking a 9mm or a .45 of some sort. How much money would I be looking to pay for a hand gun? I've fired a few handguns at the range before. I really liked the xd .40 and .45. The glock was nice, but the grip was sorta weird for me.

I already have a gun license. What other steps do I need to take in order to buy one?

Get a sig i think the model# is p229 40 cal i could be wrong but sig makes a weapon that will last forever

How much money are you able to spend? guns are like cars, you can get a honda accord or a ferrari and the performance/quality will be evident from the price you pay.

Ive owned glocks and you can find them all day long for $500. glocks are the toyota of handguns: reliable, economical, lasts forever. I dont know which glock you shot but if you have medium sized hands the G19 (9mm) or G23 (.40 cal) would do very nicely for concealed carry and home defense. glocks have .45's but its not their bread and butter as their .45's tend to be bulky in that caliber. If you want a good .45 for carry theres Springfield, they make a Champion model "1911" style .45 that is very nice.
As you can see you need to get more specific with what you require or want so you can narrow we can narrow down models and such.

9mm will offer plenty of knockdown power with the right round and ammo is cheap enough to shoot it often.

A Springer Mil-Spec .45 will most likely be my next handgun purchased. I would really like a TRP, but $1400 is a little out of my price range for a first time 1911.

You must not live in the city

Oh, I do. And let me tell you that poors and violent minorities look upon me with awe when I'm shooting tight groups into the center ring of the bullseye I painted on the forclosed house next door. I always flash my shiny pimped-out duel-cams at them, too, so they know I'm a force to be reckoned with.

Do you still carry a LCP?

I recently bought a S&W 642 for pocket carry.

Yep, love it! This used to be my packing gun, but it was temporary since it was too big. Now it's my house gun. I have a collectors .45 and a shotgun, those don't get used often though.

I don't shoot Glocks as well as some others just because of how it fits my hand. I have a Beretta model 96 that's easy to shoot well, a Colt 1911 that I shoot well because of practice, The first Sig Sauer I fired was amazingly easy to shoot well, but the first handgun that I think of when people ask about for protection is a revolver.
Two things here though that have conflicting ideas. I have used auto pistols enough now that they'd be my first choice if it has a rail for a light. Most home invasion / personal defense involves low light. A light on the pistol is such an advantage that it far outweighs the clumsy appearance. However, a double action revolver has no levers, switches, buttons, etc. You bring it into the sight picture and pull the trigger. Most "gun battles" of home defense are three shots or less from both parties involved. I have used a S&W airweight and Ruger SP101 for personal carry and think highly of both. They are easy to conceal as well.
If I were buying a nightstand gun now, it would be in .40 or .45, with the rail & light, and a Sig, H&K, or a 1911 clone.

I have a glock some smith stuff and also a taurus. However my two favorites are my two kimbers. Kimber is the cadillac of handguns IMO!
I have an elite carry and now my newest purchase is a brand new Kimber Stainless pro raptor in 45 acp! Its a hand cannon! No matter what you decide to purchase just make sure your legal. Hand gun laws are out of fucking hand here in the states! I seen you had a permit and all that so looks like you have done your research let us know what you decide on bro!

Glocks are mostly just shit, the only upside is that if done by a trained professional can easily be taken apart and smuggled aboard air craft. Just Saying. If you are palning on hijacking a plane Glock is the way to go.

I've had a H&K P7M8 for years for both home protection and ccw and so far so good. Some will arguee the 9mm is weak, I call BS on that. Plus the P7M8 has that extra protection (squeeze cocker grip) that no other gun has while being single action. Pretty good if you have kids around. Of course they're pricey, but it's one of the most accurate handgun and with the right ammo it will do and probably exceed your expectations.

9mm is fine as long as you are aware you will need to fire several rounds. I've had conversations with people shot by 9mm while rendering aid. I have yet to say that about a .40 or .45.

home defense?? shotgun, or a revolver..

It's simple really, you are sleepy, and non alert, there is a crash, your heart is beating fast, your blood is pounding away, they are coming for you fast. you need something you can point and pull...

no safety, no loading clips, ever see a clip come loose when you pull it from a holster?? i have..

And shoot the gun every 3 months without fail.. and learn to do it left handed as well..

good luck... remember, over penetration (going through sheetrock) kills more innocent people than anything.. and when you miss and it kills the kid in the house next door.. you are still liable..

Yeah that was a knucklehead remark.

Some models have some issues, others have none at all. My 21, which was my father's before me, is now 15 years old. It's been incredibly reliable. Superior weapon by any standard.

I keep my Remington 870 Express 12ga beside my bed. I would hate to use it in the house :) imagine the bloody mess

I've been around guns since I was about 8 years old, I can shoot my Walther in my sleep so grogginess wont be an issue.

I have no neighbors, but if I did, I'm sure they'd be annoying enough that I'd want them dead.

Due to their mental disability, women shouldn't be allowed to have anything bigger than a .22

i've answered (given my opinion on) this question before. . .and like someone above said. . .i keep my remington 870 next to my bed, because i don't wanna buy a special purpose shotgun. . .but honestly? dark, middle of the night, scared shitless, shaking like a dog shitting razor blades, where a single projectile might have a hard time finding it's target?? i say something like this:

i have a couple of handguns, including a taurus raging bull. . .but for realworld home defense?? can't beat a shotgun.

My advice would to be to go with a shotgun for home defense. You have to try to miss with .OO buck and it won't go through a wall and kill an innocent person. It takes a lot more practice to be competent with a sidearm. Also, I prefer pump action because chambering a shotgun round might scare off a lot of thieves without a shot being fired.

yea, but this gun that he wants is a 1st time owner, otherwise he wouldn't need to ask the question..

owned by a chick on a gun thread. beautiful.

Agree with Spywizard; revolver or shotgun. The revolver is much easier to keep hidden

Revolver? You living in a Clint Eastwood film? A Colt 1911 is the most proven and effective sidearm in the world. :)

Nobody gets up after a .45 ACP to the chest.
