Any amateur boxers out there? I've got an Army bout coming up...

...the guy I'm fighting is 5'9" and about 210, bench presses over 400lbs. A great athlete. I am 6' 205, bench press about 275. I am in better cardio shape and I've got the reach by about 5", but he'll probably kill me if he connects once.

Anyone got any good training tips?

We've got a few experienced boxers in my battalion that are running a training program. I'll be hitting the heavy bag, doing roadwork, weight training, sparring, etc.

I'll have to go home and watch Rocky tonight to get motivated!

Dont worry about what he can bench press that has nothing to do with anything you either have a good punch or not! Dont get yourself worried about that or you are already defeated! You have the advantage with being taller, cardio will help you and Just hope you can box better! Good luck! AAA

I've never boxed but I did train in kickboxing for about a year. So take these suggestions for what you will.

In this situation, I'd use quick jabs a lot. Keep him away from you. When he get frustrated and charges you, uppercut.

If you're in better cardio shape, dance around a lot. I like to Jitterbug.

On your power punches, learn how to put your hips into it.

Punch him in the nose hard. Either you break it (fight over) or his eyes water up and he can't see (a couple more punches and fight over :D ) Don't ask how I know this.

Rib shots hurt. So does the soloplexus. Again, don't ask.

I am glad to see that you have chosen a great sport BOXING is the sport of gods. Ok now that thats out of the way I will tell ya the basics. Being strong has nothing to do with success in a boxing ring, you can punch or you can't no amount of weight you can lift really means dick when you step in the ring. You need to get the basics down make sure you have a stiff jab and keep your hands up at all times, when you jab make sure your other hand doesn't dip down leaving you open for a counter hook, which happens more than I can even explain. Boxing is about conditioning more than anything no matter how hard you can punch or how strong you are it doesn't matter if you can't last 3mintues in the ring throwing punches without huffing like a 3 pack a day smoker. Start on the roadwork try and get up to being able to run 3-4 miles at a time without stopping also throw in some bursts where you run full speed for a few yards then back to normal pace. This has worked with great success in my own boxing career and I am sure it will in yours also. Remember get a good coach he can help you with the things in person that I can only try to explain over a message board. Good luck and knock that motherfucker out.

Thanks for the tips. Don't get me wrong, I'm not worried, as a matter of fact, I am the one who challenged him to fight. He is drumming up a lot of talk around the battalion that I will kill him because I'm taller, better reach, etc. I point out that he is stronger.

I do intend to use reach and cardio to my advantage. I plan on jabbing him to death, and when he tries to clobber me with his powerhouse, I will counter with a right and smack his ass good.

Hopefully he won't bite my ear off. :fro:

Hey man! I use to box as an amateur for 3 years proir to having to quite becuase of highschool and work. I say I did all right with an amateur record of 6-1-2. Anyways I think you'll do just fine and you want to make sure you box him not become a powerful slug feast my brother. Anyway's you said your in better cardio shape then he is in right..the longer your in the the more of threat you will become to him.....I want you to still keep your cardio up and make sure your moving inside that ring and work that body so you take out his legs ok! Remember they don't even have to be all power plus it will put you up on points if you stay busy. Just don't panic and goodluck!

Sounds like sound advice, but if I'm the one doing all the moving around, how will it take out his legs? He may just stand there or lurch around trying to take a shot at me while I'm dancing like Muhammad Ali.
