Any amateur boxers out there? I've got an Army bout coming up...

Well, I had my boxing match last night. I lost in a split decision. It was a great match! My opponent was about 5'10", weighed in at 217 and is very powerful. I came in at 6' and 207. I have a 3" reach advantage and I am quicker. I came out jabbing and was having pretty good success at first. He came at me like a man possessed with round house rights and lefts. I managed to get under most of them and even get in a few body shots, and then he clocked me good and I went down in round 1 and got a standing 8.

I recovered quickly, and went back to jabbing. In the second round, we both got in quite a few shots. I went to his body a lot with some success, and caught a few more of his hellacious punches. The round could have probably gone to either fighter.

Round three was mine. I again came out jabbing with my left and his arms started to fall. He is a southpaw and I just then realized that he was more vulnerable to my right than my left and I started a series of straight rights. I connected with several good ones, but he kept coming! I tagged him with a few more and blood spurted out of his nose. I was pumped that I got to this guy!

As time ran out in the 3rd and last round, both of us were too tired to do much more than look at each other. If I could have managed a last vicous flurry, I think I would have convinced another judge that I should win. Many folks told me later that I was robbed. (Of course these were family and friends).

Anyway, it was a great fight, a great night of boxing! What a sport.

That's ok man your still a winner because you gave it your heart and you didn't give up! Just remember we all have to lose to become great champs.

PEACE!

I definitely like the training, and the results of the training. My wife is not too crazy about me stepping into the ring though. We'll see...

I appreciate that. I was asking myself what in the hell am I doing as I stepped into that ring, but it felt great afterwards.

then just spar :)

Ok, first you have to realize that even if you do a lot of cardio. You aren't going to go into the ring and dance around the ring like Ali for 15 rounds. Maybe not even 2. Depends on the length of the rounds, the amount of rounds, and time in between rounds. If you watch Toughman, those guys get tired pretty quick. They aren't pros but some of them train for real because they want that $50,000 prize. SO DON'T USE UP YOUR ENERGY ALL UP IN THE 1ST ROUND. Feel him out. Use the jab, a lot. Keep using it until your arm is about to fall off. It keeps your opponent away and it sets it up for other punches. If you watch Ali fights. He stuck the jab in their eye all day long and threw combo's here and there until he wore them down and then he finished them off. Well the fights that I saw anyway.

Street fighting and boxing is not the same. Remember that.

Go to the body a lot. Especially if you two are wearing head gear. Body shots hurt a lot more.

Don't get sloppy. Use proper techniques. Just cause you see an opening don't close your eyes and throw the hay maker. There is a chance you might miss and he can take huge advantage of that.

Lots of advil and tylenol too.

Getting hit isn't that bad if you got gear on. It also depends on the person throwing the punches. If you have two guys trying to rip each others head off then it's going to really suck.

If you lose, don't worry about it. You can get him next time. Learn from your mistakes and don't make them again. You keep doing that then you will become a much better boxer each time.

congrats on a good match even if you did not get the decision ttlpkg.

sounds like you fought him real hard

Thanks. Yeah, I did hurt him a little. I was out at the Officer's Club drinking beer right after the fight. He went right home to rest and sleep. It was kind of funny. Our troops will have something to talk about for a long time, and we made lots of money for our family support groups.

I think I'd do it again, like others said, you learn a lot every time you get in the ring, and learn to use good technique and patience.

SHIT!!!!

I totally missed this thread!!! I was really into boxing for a few years.

Oh yeah? Did you ever get into the ring?

hell yeah!!!

I fought in the lightweight class and then came back in the welterweight class. That was short lived due to some health problems.

You do realise that with your weight you would be fighting in the same class as Tyson and Bo.

I love boxing.. I am partial to the lightweight through middleweight classes.
