I can't stay away from the 20 rep rest-pause set of squats for long. Call it masochism. I know 5 rep sets can be difficult, but if you've never tackled this before, you might not even know what it means to train HARD yet. I'm starting to defer from the power style squat back to the higher bar, closer stance squat. I need some serious medialis work to correct an imbalance and this will help pronto. Also I've found this stance easier for higher reps.

To anyone that has never tried it, you really should. It's a good way to see what you're really made of. Every time I try and do a set of 20 I know that will be the single hardest thing I've done in my life.

This isn't an ordinary "set of 20 reps," this is a set where you do 20 reps with your 10 rep max. That's right, load the bar to where you would fail in the 10-12 rep range. Instead of racking the bar you take several deep breaths between reps to knock out the last 10. You will generally require more time as the reps get higher. This one set might take you 5 minutes to complete.

I urge everyone here to try this at least once. VIDEOTAPE IT IF POSSIBLE. I would love to see 20 rep sets and for you to show it to those who do not understand the sheer WILL it takes to overcome the set! For some of you, you might look at the bar as you're lying on the ground in a pool of lactic acid, delirious with both victory and lack of oxygen, and remark, "now I know what it means to train hard."

I did it once awhile back and my legs and lower back were like fried eggs and my heart was pumping like a locamotive. felt like i had a leg workout and a 5 mile run all in a few minutes time

agree agree agree. If you really wanna test yourself and see just what your truly made of.........these are the babies.

I love/hate 20 rep squats. They make me sweat like no other, and I have to collapse on the floor for a few minutes before I can walk anywhere. My quad definition has improved greatly from adding these suckers into my leg workouts.

Still not sure how its possible to do 20 reps with a "true" 10 rep max. You mean a 10 rep set thats usually not taken to complete failure?

I usually hit 3 sets of 5 starting w/ 225 going to 375 or 405 then dropping to 225 for 20 reps. Its funny that after the heavy work I seem to hit 20 reps rather easy. Perhaps its time to up the wieght.

high rep squats are killers

my old training partner and i would a 100 rep set like every 4 months

only 135 on the bar, but 100 straight reps burns like shizzle

You simply just don't rack the bar. Then you take as short a rest as possible required for you to knock out the next rep. This might be 3 long, deep breaths or a few more. By the time you get closer to 20 you could be spending 20 seconds between reps.

"you do 20 reps with your 10 rep max."

which is like 90% of your max???? just curious-- seems to me like your form would break down at about rep 15-- & you wouldnt be doing a full squat.

Ive done 20rep squats @ much lower weight (like 50% of max) & was fried...even w/20 second rests-- you prob wont be able to do a full squat (maybe on the Smith Machine so you can rack it b4 ya puke :)

Obviously some people have done them:) so it's not impossible. They aren't saying it's going to be a quick set, it can take many minutes to complete.

I agree-- theyre arent a quick set & theyre prob not going below parellel either.

All mine were parallel when I did them. Don't think too hard about it guys, lol. Just do 20 reps with your usual 10 rep weight.

I attempted this once a couple years ago, and I went ATF.

I used 215lbs, and got 15 reps, and had to rack it and rest for 5-10 minutes before I was able to crap out 10 more.

The next day, I had gained 5lbs.

It is a brutal workout that I am thinking of doing in the next couple months for a change on ME Lower.

toughest workout I've ever done for sure. Probably not an exciting video though, guy breathing like a racehorse, sweatin his ass off ans screaming...

I haven't done a 20 rep squat set in about 5 years. As I remember I thought I was going to die. I don't ever go over 10 on squats now and that's pretty much only at warm up weight. Though I friend of mine set our college record by doing 72 reps with 225lbs, all of them to parallel or below. His body is just geared for reps though.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Agreed. The burn is maddening. I used to always squat in the 17-18 rep range. Remember Ed Corney squatting with A in Pumping Iron? I always thought of his drive to keep going in that set when I wanted to scream and put the #$$%&^% bar down.

I've done it a few times. My heart was pounding harder than it ever has. I felt light-headed. I almost lost my lunch. My legs were on fire, and they were wickedly sore the next day.

The only thing i can compare a true 20 rep squat to is running a 400 meter dash in a meet. That's the only thing that has ever left me as totally blown up and winded as the 20 rep program.

I do them below parallel.

if anyone gives a crap I'll record the last few reps of my sunday wo (w/325) - theyre the ones where you see the pain (my digicam only records like 30 second movies too heh)
