An Open Letter To Those Born Before 1978 (the rest of you will appreciate this, too)

Re: An Open Letter To Those Born Before 1978 (the rest of you will appreciate this, t

Coleco Vision video games - had the controller big as a fucking phone and with a key pad of numbers at the bottom.

Who remembers the electronic game MERLIN where you could play 7 different games at once.

The Green Machine

Nehi Orange and Grape drinks.

Staying up to midnight to see Michael Jackson's Thriller video because it was "too intense" for regular tv programming.

The USA channel always played kung fu movies all day Saturday.

+1

Had a Coleco Vision and remember Merlin. I was more of a Simon man myself. USA played lots of weird shit back then. It was the go to station for edited-for-TV horror movies and "b-squad" cartoons like "Jabberjaw."

No iPod with headphones in the ears ignoring the world either.

I actually think headphones are one of the greatest inventions ever.....possibly the greatest. Being able to walk down the street while minimizing the amount "sensory soiling" one gets from the modern industrialized world....that's a godsend!!

LOL, I was born in 59', weed in the 70's was generally called a "lid" for some reason, maybe to was regional idk, but it wasn't measured in oz's, it was a 4 finger lid, or 3 finger, which was how many fingers high it was in a baggie. Most cost 10 bucks...

It was called a "lid" because everybody used those flip top sandwich baggies. I don't think they even make those things anymore. They were the predecessor to ziplocks and had a plastic "lid" that you flipped over and it would sort of air lock the bag to keep your sandwich fresh.

Originally a full baggie was a "lid" because it was as much as you could get in and still flip over the lid and get it closed. Then things became 3 finger and 4 finger etc... as the economics changed on the price of weed.

I remember when I was in elementary school a 3-4 finger bag was a dime bag... and a 1-2 finger bag was a nickel... and a full bag was a lid. Then by junior high a 3-4 finger bag was a lid.

The dope scene was also a ton more social back then. Dope was weak and much more tranquil... and it took 3-4 joints to really get high... so everybody sat around talking and talking as they'd pass the joint. Then some time around '73 sensimia first hit the scene... one toke and you were destroyed... and dope was never fun again.

Lots and lots of people stopped smoking dope in 73-74 because they thought strong pot took all the fun out of it.

Does anyone remember when we used to carry around Visine so that you could smoke dope and your teachers wouldn't catch you because of your flaming red eyes? I don't see this phenomena anymore... but it used to be dope turned everybody's eyes red... really really red... and you had to hide it from your teachers.

That is what a lid meant. I was later in the game than sofa but I think a dime bag was about 3 fingers in 9th grade. He's right about the strong weed too. We use to get Columbian gold, weak, nice pot that made you giggle. Couple of shots of visine to be good to go. LOL> I don't think kids carry visine any more at all. I'm sure they still smoke dope. Maybe not, I'm not really sure about that.

Here's a shocker, he's from California!

I think you have a state constitutional right to purchase weed at economic prices in the elementary school cafeterias there.

I remember the good old TRS-80 Model I level II computer. About six months after getting one, I got my hands on a used expansion interface which took me from a decent 4k RAM size to a ludicrous 16k RAM.

And the thought of a graphics-based computer game was a stretch. It had bit-mapped graphics, but even pushing a little block of graphics across the screen maxed-out the 500 KHz processor's power. I was 11 years old at the time and when I couldn't mess with the computer itself, I carried the manuals with me. I remember even bringing the books to the swimming pool. Here's a pic of two of my three favorite books I found on ebay:

And there was one more... "How to Program the Zilog Z-80". I slept with that book!

It's called evolution :)

Isn't that how the IBM PC was made? People took trillions of TRS-80's, and each person changed one wire. The ones that broke were thrown away, and the one that worked was replicated another trillion times. Then they changed another wire, rinse, repeat. By 1980, voila! The IBM PC was born.
