I was just curious, when ever I read some of you guys stats on here you'll have down bench 350 5 reps etc... now when im juicin doing a cycle I get stronger but I have to be honest with you I never even benched 315 but yet I get bigger nut shreded but to the point where people will be like are you using roids and we all know we love when people ask us that, But for real I never really push it to lift crazy weight i'll just throw maybe 250 on there do a couple reps.Is this normal or should I be trying to push my self to my max lifts even if I'm seeing good results..Thanks guys

not everyone wants to lift that much,
like you stated results can be obtained without lifting max weight,
its more a question of do you want to lift that heavy?

depends one what your looking for.. your results can be be obtained without benching your ass off but you still wanna push yourself a little extra when ur using aas thats jsut my opinion

My training partner is the exact same way. He's a big solid guy with a couple cycles under his belt, maybe 5'8" bout 230's bf bout 15% or so, but not very strong at all. Pushes just over 2 plates on bench for reps. Point is, if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

some peoples bench are just not their best point.... for instance i can only bench 315.... but can do incline dumbell press just as good if not better then someone who can bench 350.... bench just isnt my best lift

ur also saving ur joints in the long run... so thats a good thing

on a different not... if u train for power u may be able to bench more cause ur not tiring urself out with numerous reps before u get to ur max

I agree with genetics...I think you can train for power versus size...and I also feel like a whole lot of "Max lifts" are in the mind. You can train your mind to get you over a sticking point as well as your muscles.

My bench has always been my weak link. I got 270 last fall and I'M GOING TO GET 300 this spring. I'm 40-plus and been lifting regularly for many moons. It's funny but, before my knees wore out, I could squat 505 for a couple of reps and I still do weighted pull-ups with a 45 lb plate, dumbell rows with the 150's and my heavy sets of barbell curls I'm using 135 to 140. However, my bench has always been kind of embarrasing.

Bottom line. No, you're not alone. :)

I trin bench hard and to max almost every week and this week I broke into the 370 range for my max. I'm trying to put on size and with strength comes size.

no your not the only one.

Maybe we should form a support group??

LOL, jk!

... alot of quality posts/points stated already in this thread. I'll say that, again, seems to depends on what your goals are and how you started lifting. I started training around the rep range of 15-10 (7 some odd years ago). Now, I'm focusing more on lower reps to try and get stronger... it's very encouraging to see how much stronger you can be in the low rep range. It's more of a personal competition with me, breaking P.R.'s ect.

I think musculature has a lot to do with it too. The points on your body where your chest and shoulder muscles connect are slightly different. You might get better leverage doing one exercise over another. Someone with equal stats to you could bench more, but there could be a lift where you out perform them. I don't give 2 licks about bench press weight. As long as I can at least do my body weight for a few reps, I'm happy. I want a nicely developed chest. It's attainable without doing 400 pounds. If you're getting the results you want without going crazy on the weight, then you're on the right path.

the game here is body building

who's gonna pull in more looks in general? The fatty next to you who can put up 500lbs on bench? or you under 8% and lean as hell? who's gonna pull in more pussy? :)

Going heavy,if you push your max say 1 to 2 reps say 3 sets your going to rip more muscle then reping will. Which means more muscle back! Try this then drop back to 250 you will see that 250 will be lite as hell and you will do more reps...If yea aint sore for 3 days you didnt do a workout! 250 is ok if you just want to rep it,but if yea aint pushing your body to the max you wont see mass growth and steady gains.Just my opinion

who says u cant get strong and big as well? try 10 sets of three with 80% of ur max and add 5lbs to the bar every workout you will big and strong on 10x3 bro same thing as going 3x10 but u can use heavier loads which equalls more motor recruitment which equals SIZE AND STRENGHT now u can be proud when some retard who knows nothing asks "how much u bench"?

My numbers are pretty pathetic for my size, but im a bodybuilder not a powerlifter. Its not how much you lift its how much you look you lift.

its genetics to a point i think. everyone has there weak excercise. my best friend is 6 foot 205 7% bf. he puts up 475 no problem like 5 times. he has only done winstrol cycles he just is built like that. however, his biceps are not strong at all. i can only do about 225 on bench but when we curl i am doing slightly less than him. his arms look like he curls with 100 pound dumbells, yet he uses the 50s just like me. then i have a friend who is about 5 6 165 benching like 185 tops. however his physique is incredible. he looks like he weighs 200. and then i know guys who are quite thin and don't look like they workout but they'll throw 305 on the bench no problem.

As my doctor told me last year when I messed up my rotator cuffs, "your body was not made to lift that much weight" dont over do it, just gradully increase as you body allows for added resistance, strenght and mass, it's not important how big the number is, it's what your body needs to grow.

I agree, my chest has that space in the sternum so I can't bench much more than 225 to 245. I think it's just how the muscles are. My bicepts are pretty lame as well, they don't look huge no matter how hard I work them. Traps, tris, legs and calfs are out of control, it's just the way I was built.

leave the ego at home bro.

I was short, stocky, and strong as hell...until my rotator cuff surgery.

now I'm short, stocky, and I *look* strong as hell. Kinda. :P

took me a good 5 years (yes, no shit) to finally get over the "gotta lift damn heavy" mindset. It was well worth the wait, but I always wonder what coulda been...

at any rate, your joints will thank you.

takes time guy, doesn't happen overnight

I am one of those guys who doesn't look like a bodybuilder and can't lift like a power lifter... LOL.
I look okay and can lift okay... nothing crazy.
Below is what I do for chest right now:

Flat:
set 1 135 15 reps
set 2 185 12 reps
set 3 225 10 reps
set 4 275 8 reps
set 5 315 1 or 2 reps

Incline:
set 1 135 15 reps
set 2 185 12 reps
set 3 225 10 reps
set 4 275 3 reps

I am completely clean and have a partial tear in my right bicep tendon so I don't go crazy on lifts. I'm 33 years old too. I am very carefull not to hurt myself.

I would love to get back to 365 on the flat and 315 on the incline. I may be able to hit 315 for one or two on the incline if I do it first.

I always have to ramp up in order to warm up the muscles. It seems to take me forever so I never do a warm up and then a one rep max. I am too afraid of injury!

Dude! What in THE hell happened to your karma?? Good gawd!

I bookie's a MNF game and there was a pile-on. The side with the pile-on won. Live and learn. No more bookie events for me!

To make my lifts stronger I'll do 2 warmup sets. one with 135lbsx10reps on bench, and another with 225x10. Then I'll jump to 315 and do as many as I can for two sets. On a good day maybe 7 reps on the first and 5-6 on the second. Then I'll do one more set with 275 for as many as I can. I always use this system on most exercises and it works well for me. Another thing to do if you want more strength is really strengthen the secondary muscles involved like your tri's and delts. That will help for sure.

like everyone else that posted on here bro it comes with time and all depends on what you want to get out of it, some people like the fact of benching a ton and some just want to be ripped...dont sweat it and just remember there will ALWAYS be someone who is bigger and stronger, your doing this for you and not them.....good lifting for your goals.......
