alright starting training tomarrow

havn't trained in awhile
dunno when we are going to again
but I've been doing some training on my own
I did some RoundKicks on the bag and I think my kicks are alright actually I was slightly proud of myself over them

hope things work out for you..

do you know any other instructors in your area if things dont work out?

watch some vids then, keep training off the mat and stay focused..

ok worked again today (well yesterday now) but very breif class
just reviewed some things we had done before
rolling bellying out and pulling guard from cross body
hope to get more in this upcoming evening/tomarrow

my Low Kicks have been getting pretty decent
after 60 or so reps my obliques start to like cramp sort of
quite discomforting

are you ever taught to go to your stomach when in a hold? i thought that was a sport judo thing only?

perhaps i mis understood your bellying out comment?

my instructor will teach us just about anything that can realistically be useful in a situation we may realistically find ourselves in
I don't know how bellying out would look to a Judo guy but what it is to us is basically if we are down in Cross Body (sorry he's odd on names Cross Body might not be what other people call it, but it's a mount/hold where your like holding the guy down with your sternem on his chest roughly and he can be elbowed or kneed in the ribs or head for the picture)
and when on bottom it would look like this
Cross Body Bottom > Shrimp in > Scissorkick legs so we are on our belly (this is bellying out) > Pull our knees under us > Reach through their legs to grab ankle > Go forward into them to get them on their backs
it's hard to explain and hard to do the first few times but it's not that bad once you get used to it
I belive it came from Wrestling but it may well have come from Judo
or BJJ
I never know where he learned the grappling stuff he teaches us but I an recognise all the standup
tho the striking is easy the actual strikes come from Boxing or MThai so if it's a kick a knee or an elbow its' MThai if it's a Punch it's from Boxing
tho he has a tiny bit of JKD sprinkled in for striking

stinks man.. sorry to hear about that..

i like that escape.. are you ever taught how to go from being pinned and then regaining guard?

btw ive recently learned a bunch of cool attacks from the turtle position.

good luck

hopefully can get a class in Sunday
wish me luck
we've practiced pulling guard from being in crossbody bottom
despite being a big fellow I am told I did it pretty well
describe turtle position to me? we use boxing to so in our mind Turtle is to put both hands together in front of your face (great for absorbing straight punches but quite hookable...)

lol i like trading terms like this..

when i meant turtle above i meant the position you will see in some grappling type matches where the guy is on his knees and elbows staying very tucked and balled up..

your boxing turtle is one of the ways i was taught in a bjj class on how to close the distance very quickly.. basically just protect as much of the soft/front part of your face as possible and almost just charge your opponent.. it wasnt taught as the #1 way or anything like that but could be used in a lot of different situations.

yah it has some options
against someone who dosn't use the hook much it's great but to turtle and come in can rob you of a good deal of yoru sight so if he's a good boxer with a serious hook, please avoid that approach
unless you like looking up at the lights wondering how you got there lol
I hook like, constantly my hook is like my jab
everything works off of the jab in boxing, well for me everything works off of the damned hook
it's my insticintive counter etc
so I'm about the only person in our class that Turtles regularly
and yah it's belly out, turtle, reach under for ankle
so yah we do the turtle but only in a few situations cus we don't like to be Guiolltened
thanks for posting in here regularly the more I post here the mor I think about training

The best sparring tip your prolly ever gonna get is to always look the guy in the eye, its not bad to avoid getting hit ;-) IMO its better to never hit other than always being aggresive, aggresiveness is good but it can also get you in trouble.

I train 5 days/week, of course i also teach so that has alot to do with it.

Most schools have a program where they let students teach once they get higher ranked, we do, its helping our students alot...

again that running in turtling thing was just one of the first ways to get in and is just kinda cool imo not the most effective.

right now my best move for self defense would definately be a double leg take down

someone is trying to convince me a single leg might be better.. but MY single leg is not as good.. yet :)

tmk: i recently started teaching and it has really helped me with the basics and some techniques i havent gone over in a while. i also think its really cool to help people like that because i remember what i thought of the higher ranks that helped me out when i was younger...

sorry bro.. good luck w/ that

is there anything else offered in your area

I'm not far from Charollette but honestly I really only want to train with these guys right now cus they are my friends
I am somewhat tempted to look into a Judo Club or Boxing Club tho
either one would help with MMA and the instructor favors Boxing right now anyway so it would be a lot like the training I'm doing now
only thing is I am really enjoying our groundwork

yeah i hear ya .. i refuse so many training offers these days cause i like my club plain and simple thats all i want to train w/ right now..

but.. i am on the mat 6 days a week so im not missing out.. if you dont have a consistent schedule or miss days for whatever reasons.. it would probably be worth scouting the area out and at least establishing some contact with another good instructor and just be honest up front. Tell him your not interested in switching clubs or anything like that but for whatever reasons you dont get to train as often as you would like and im sure you will find something to benefit you.

most clubs good clubs would jump at the opportunity of cross training with another good person, attitude wise especially and you seem to have that!

Good Luck

eh thanks but Im' not so sure I have enough skill to trade for more skill heh
just about everybody would want to be paid, and I have a job I could afford it I just would feel bad about paying someone else for something I was getting for free from a friend Id feel like I was screwing him over

Im glad im not the only one who is dedicated to there school, i cant see myself training anywhere else...

BTW, Kane the crossbody you refer to is commonly called the 'Side Mount'

Hope you get to train more..

-TMK(btw this is TMK72688 i kinda messed up with plat so im using this now :p)

yah I'm just used to calling it CrossBody instead of SideMount
we also tend to refer to it as StandUp instead of Striking
I hope I get to train more to

thank you Jesus!
more then likely I will get to train this Saturday evening
which will be great as the UFC is this Friday
card may nto be the greatest but I'l get to see some fights and that's the main thing
wel training is the main thing but the ufc is good to

ok we trained a little
not too much new info, just a move to get from them on your back to you intheir guard
and we did a lot of punch combinations and some punch/lowkick
also did a little bit of shoot practice so that was new

oh btw
my isntructor said he could tell I had been workin on the bag
he actually asked me if I had been practicing on my own
I was like kickass it's paying off somehow

I didn't get to train last week
*sigh*
instructor needed his car fixed and it took liek forever
what ya gonna do...
I been practicing on my own of course
but it isn't the same as training
I modified my stance a bit and I believe my manuverability on my feet has improved
sitll working on ground manuverability tho

we did a lot of reps of some basic stuff
instructor had the flu but hey it was better then nothing
and he did talk us through some shoots and that went well
well, it went well for me
he said my shoots didn't look bad
also saw Doom and liked it

lol I looked and didn't see it!
thanks tho
ok I finally trained again
twice actually since this was updated
we did some ground stuff which went ok
my instructor said he would actually rather see me stay in guard and pound from there and only bother to pass guard if the other guys guardwork was giving me trouble
that's fine with me I'm pretty comfortable in guard, it is hard for someone to get away from me if their legs are wraped around me heh
then we did some punching with the pads and he said my inside punching looked pretty good
I was glad because I havn't practiced much inside punching it just kinda comes natural
he said if I get inside I should be able to ko people with very few clean shots
(I'm hoping for one heh)

ok didnt' train last week that sucks
hopefully this upcoming week we will train
my cross seems a lot better if someone holds the bag for me
I'm not sure why but I'm pleased

ok so my instructor basically sent me to another school for some basics and extra sparring partners
the grappling instruction is good (I think) but the striking instruction is a joke
sad but I mostly want sparring partners to
if I wind up sparring and dominating most of them so much the better for my confidence I guess
I taped someone last class
he was much smaller then me but more experienced so I guess it worked out well
he taped me as well tho so we are 1 and 1

ok so today I met Sean O'Haire (Sp) that was pretty cool
I rolled with someone in the place for five years and it took him awhile to tap me he baited me by giving up an arm I took awhile to go for it because I thought it was too easy but I figured I wouldn't learn if I didn't try
he was fast
another guy I rolled with beat me as well but said he didn't think he was ever getting out of the headlock or facelock I forget what it was called and he said I rolled well
they both beat me with a Kimura so I'm thinking I need to work on defending that specific move

ok so I still got that gloveshyness thing as you can tell from my other thread but my ground work has improved a good deal
I was complimented by a guy I roll with a lot up there he actually thanked me for rolling with him cus he said he had to work for the submissions now
he actually puased the rolling to tel lme good job one time and he said my cardio is improving a lot
I"m glad about all that

ok same guy (he's my gotoguy for rolling becuase he's always willing and he has a good blend to where I'm stronger then him but not by so much that I can just overpower him and walk through him or anything, and he's quicker then me but not so much that once he starts something I can't get a defence in so he's physically my best matchup there. he also critiques after the match that's golden if you have that please appreciate it)
so anyway I rolled with him a week ago and he said he was close to tapping out whenI had him in a choke
I was in the bottom of North/South at the time

I hadn't updated in awhile
I think I'm getting better
I've been told I'm improving quickly so that's good

one of the instructors said I was doing better this week then I had last week so that is good
he also said I nearly had him with a Guillotine but he may have just been being nice
I also had a cool Cross Choke on him that didn't tap him but it caused him to defend in a way that let me pass his guard into CrossBody/SideMount
but I dislike using the Gi he was wearing because if I was to compete in Mixed ever I wont be able to do that

alright so this past tuesday I had a good session, I was rolling with the instructor
most people roll 6-8 minutes with him then are worn out
he checked the time and said 10 minutes, good
probubly all in all we rolled for 12 minutes
he didn't tap me out a whole lot of times in that 12 minutes but he got me several times
the week before we went 8 minutes and he tapped me 8 times hehe it was almost like an egg timer
but I did pretty good tuesday, when he was on my back I got his ankle and was looking for some kind of sub from there I managed to use it as a lever to pull him off of my back (which may have been a mistake I seem to be oddly good from there) eventually we wound up rather like a pretzal, I had his ankle in one arm defending a choke with the other his leg up over my shoulder trying to get his other leg free, and then I wraped my leg over that leg to stop the free leg....
after we were done rolling he had one of the assitant instructors come over and compliment me (he had to move on to another student to get a good cardio workout from it) but it was great I was quite pleased
