Wildlife authorities have killed an alligator that attacked an 11-year-old
boy this afternoon in Slidell and have recovered the boy's arm from inside
the alligator.

St. Tammany Sheriff's Office officials say a boy and two girls were
swimming in a lake behind the Kingspoint subdivision when an alligator
attacked an 11-year-old boy and bit his arm off at the shoulder.

Sheriff's spokesman Captain George Bonette says deputies working in the
subdivision ran a mile to get to the boy and get him out of the water.
They pulled the boy out of water, and is being airlifted to Ochsner
Hospital in the New Orleans.

Officials have hooked and killed the alligator, and have recovered the
boy's arm, and are rushing the arm to the hospital.

My sis lives in FL. They don't even enter fresh water. Gators are everywhere in fresh water.

Kid's gonna be tying a knot in one of his sleeves from now on.......reattachment was unsuccessful.

I didn't even know we were at a stage now surgically where it was realistic to attempt such operations. Wow.

Oh sure, if it's clean, they can reattach and then hope the nerves can form collaterals and get some sort of function back. I can't imagine an alligator ripping your arm off would be too clean. There was a teenager back home that got his arm caught in an auger and they reattached it, but he never gained any function, so they did an elective amputation. Better to have no arm, than a useless one.
