Abs

when you guys are on a cycle - do you up the poundage on your ab exercises.

I know it wounds like a vague question, but seeing as most people try and reach new goals with their cycle, I was curious to see if this held true for abs also.

What would you say is the single biggest-grandaddy-of-em-all ab exercise. (one that you would use for strickly MASS.

Needsize(or one of the other top dogs) always stressed one main excersize on the decline situp bench. Basically an incline situp with a 25lb weight and pause at the point of most resistance. Hold for 5 sec and do 5 sets of 5 rep pauses each.

No.

And I will tell you why. I trained abs every single day for over 11 years due to competitive swim coaches. I simply don't need to anymore.

Also, why should you train them? The bigger and thicker your abs get, the smaller it makes your chest look.

in the army all we did was sit ups, twisting situps, leg rasesis, bicycle, just shit like like that.and most people got six packs.
I find doibf sit ups after a long run strassis the abs a lote more to.

If you life heavy enough chances are your abs are getting a good workout indirectly anyway, no need to train them too often, once a week is good, but different strokes for different folks.

Well I do a little bit of abs like everyone else, but now I HAVE to build up some strong-ass abs to help with a bad back.

The higher weight I do deadlifting, - the weaker my abs feel.

So if there was one exercise that you would stick with for pure "strength", what would it be?

abs are for pussies! come to think of it, so is liftin weights! have i got that the right way round?

I'm trying to figure out if you were trying to help me, or whether you need help bro............

im only messin about mate, i used to do thousands of sit ups when i was in the marines, now i sneer at the though of doing one! still have a six pack, under all my flab!

personally. I have never and will never train abs. I just have a 6 pack naturally and Im lucky enough to not have to train em.

however, being a personal trainer, I can say without a doubt the single most effective ab exercise ive seen for my clients is the hanging leg raise done properly. Nothing brings out the abs more in people who want hypertrophy in that area. This is just clinically speaking, i have done 1 in a row on countless occasions demonstrating the exercise to my clients, not nearly enough to see any gains in myself

I never try to build my abs. I'm already a wide bodied dude, no need to bring them out any further. Thanks to the army my side view looks like shit when the front looks great. I do light resistance stuff only.

True dat-for many guys using any added weight for ab training increases waist size. I train my waist daily-including lower back and side bends, twists, etc.

I believe what he is saying is he's not looking for the 6pack look. he wants to strengthen because of lower back problems. Cable crunches, dead lifts, medicine ball excercises, and the 6 pack workout where you are laying down and someone is standing over your head. You lift your feet up and they throw them down. Those are killer especially when thrown to the sides. With lower back probs that might not be the excercise for you Itstln. maybe some lowerback hyperextensions would help also.

Thanks bro foryour time and expertise.

Cboogs has the right idea. You need high resistence training to strengthen your abs. It's not a routine that you need to undergo continuously. I would recommend maybe twice a wk. 3-4 excersises and rest.

A couple other good ones for strength would be:

Standing sit-ups on a lat machine- attach a tricep rope on a lat machine andstand facing away from the stack. Hold either end against your chest and bend over as far as possible while pushing out your abs.

Any type of Leg Lift- Just make sure your legs are going all the way up, not just parallel. That's what's going to give you strength.

Farmer's walk

Those Needsize crunches are good.

Also obliques- bends, twists, alternatedweighted decline sit-ups to the side, suitcase deads (as already mentioned) , Russian Twists

Right- I'd work abs twice a week for strength. Nothing wrong with going heavier and reducing reps. Some people go way down to 5, I like to keep mine at at least 10. It's a judgement call.
