a strength training decision

so I received my income tax cheque today, and now I'm wondering what combination of things I should purchase to help along my strength training goals.

the first combo I can afford is an ipod shuffle (1gb space), starting strength, practical programming and olympic lifting shoes.

the second is an ipod nano (2 gig space, display, etc) and olympic lifting shoes.

I'm worried that I will be disappointed with getting the shuffle because it barely has any space and no display. plus i've heard of them breaking down easily.

also, I don't know if the books are worth it seeing as im making good progress and I have the elitefitness forums to help me along...

what do you guys think?

I have the 2 gig nano, I personally wish I had a little more, but it is definately more then enough for any workout, I bring it with me all the time, it's very small and light, helps me get a better workout, I'd go with option B. ^ ^

Elite Fitness and the resources linked up here are basically an online Starting Strength/Pratical Programming where you can ask questions and recieve feedback. If you are making good progress, maybe hold off on the books until you have some extra cash sitting around (but I would definately purchase them in the near future).

About the music:

In my opinion a good mp3 is one of the best training aids you can have :) I bring 60 gigs of music with me to the gym. I would pass on the shuffle. Maybe check out some non-Apple mp3 players, they are more affordable.

they probably have a better program or something easier to use then Itunes..

I swear Itunes is the devil.

I was leaning more towards option B myself. However, I'm not too interested in other non-apple models because I no nothing about them or their quality.

also, what kind of accessories do you think are good for an ipod nano? do you just put the player in your pocket or what?

Other mp3 players are most likely equal to ipods in terms of quality. I really think that ipods are just made to break every couple of years. Just buy a sleeve to protect your player and stick it in your pocket and have a panic attack if you ever drop it.

Or you can buy tons of different holders and keep it on your arm. Make sure to flex whenever changing songs.

I got a Sony Bean a last year and I am not that happy with it. I plan on getting a Nano this month. There is just more stuff for the Apple brand products.

I have a little shuffle that I got free at a work related conference. I love it. It holds up to a gig or so, and the battery lasts a really long time. I have no need for more space as the songs I like to work out with are more limited than my usual range of listening.

Do NOT get the shuffle. I think you should get ipod (preferably not the nano, but either way), starting strength. If you can't afford say adidas oly shoes you can go for the more affordable ones pendlay sells, or a pair of converse chuck taylors for 40 bucks or so, or put left over money aside and keep saving for the ones you want

Starting Strength is really that worth it man, I promise you. Practical Programming can wait a little because it really is more advanced, but I know you're learning how to lift right now and as such strike while the iron is hot and learn how to do those lifts correctly.

(It will save you a ton more in medical bills later on, at least potentially)

you know, funny today i noticed I actually completely tune out my music while lifting....like if it wasnt there....the pain takes over!!!

only really listen to in in between sets

Use a 1gig MP3 for the gym - Sandisk. Small, out of the way, plenty of capacity for just a few playlists.

Use a 30gig Ipod for home and travel.

Get the shoes.

I don't think the forum is a substitute for the book. The explanations and pictures are priceless, though a coach is even better.

I don't really care for the Ipod mini 4gb I have. I know its cool, but I don't really listen to it that often, and wish I had the $250 back. Sure its handy if you stay still or drive a lot, but when I start trying to squat heavy or clean the damn cord always seems to get in the way. I just tune everything out anyways. GL

F-the stupid arm band (if you can even wear it - or - are not annoyed to hell by it). Older players have the belt clip (I use a BodyGlove cell phone belt clip case) and run the chord under my shirt.

Unless you are wearing some of those cute, groovey skin tight Under Armour shirts.

Nope don't have the arm band, just the clip. I just have cheapy old nazi(navy) t-shirts. Though, some of my old ones are too tight now. Just never cared for the cord flopping around. Not to mention.......dropped the damn thing on my nuts in the car, haven't really liked it since then :worried:

So I ended up just getting the 2gb ipod nano. It's so easy to use and looks pretty cool too :D I'm happy with my purchase.

Now I'm just waiting on glenn pendalay's reply so I can order his shoes out here to Canada :D

Buy some extra laces. Heavy duty ones - like for work boots. I lace my adidas up with them - kind of match - but you need the strength. The velcro strap should NOT be tightened excessively, more for holding laces in place and a back up if the laces come untied (double knot the laces).

F THEM AND WHAT THEY THINK. If you're eating and growing and putting more and more on the bar with regularity... sooner or later they'll be staring in awe while their asses are plateauing on the same weights.

I would if I had the extra cash! I have just enough to buy shoes and thats it :(

I'm actually kind of nervous about getting the shoes too because they look so strange.

I already get strange looks when I bust out my microloading chains :/

lol, I like you're attitude. you're right :D

the only thing I'm worried about is people becoming too curious about my routine and possibly trying it out! then I won't have the squat rack to myself anymore :(

you bought the nano dude? I f'in hate my 2gig, ya' it looks cool on the outside, but it freezes up on me alot of the time and it stays there since there's really no way to open it to take the battery out. plus i hate the iTunes, you just have to make sure you have all your songs that you want to put on there, because there's no adding or subtracting songs, like if you hear a new one that you like and want to add it. well, maybe you can get your money back, buy yourself SS and PP, you definitely won't be disappointed, and just get some less expensive mp3 player where all you need is a couple of playlists for your workout. that would be my option. and just get yourself some chuck taylor's for like $40-$50, instead of going $90-$100 on those other shoes.

well i was under the impression that olympic lifting shoes were the best for olympic style squats? chucks are more for deadlifting and powerlifting type squats ?

I'm just a cheap kinda guy, anything would seem to do for me. Hell, I shop at wal-mart for my clothes and I workout barefoot. but to each their own.

I have chucks which are great for DL'ing, but for deep oly squats you kinda need to proper shoes. Makes hitting depth easier. Have to agree with you on the nano and itunes though, I never use em. Nothing wrong with walmart clothes!!!! I've gone through so many sizes lately its the only place I can afford for work pants.

some day you will all learn that its not about what's playing on the radio that pumps you up. i've hit more PR's than I care to count when something like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync or some country song was on the radio.

its all about what's inside you. not what surrounds you or what's playing in the background.

P.S. screw buying special shoes. get yourself a pair of Chuck Taylors. what are they these days $30-40.
