I can't type much because I just got surgery on my "mallet" finger (caught a cold football lol). I got a pin in it and I'm wondering if anyone knows how long I have to stop benching and bent over rowing? I can still squat, but I'd really like to know how long I have to take it easy. I was planning on working out a lot this summer, so I'm pretty upset about it, but I'm glad I got my finger fixed. I love canada, from seeing the doctor to leaving the hospital with my finger fixed was less than 24 hours :)! I don't like this at all! boo to not being able.

I don't have experience with a similar injury and haven't needed to use straps for anything, so this might not be accurate: you could try straps for rows. With bench, you'll probably have to wait until it's completely healed; unracking/pressing the bar with a compromised grip seems like more of a risk than it's worth. Smith machine benching (another thing with which I have no experience) might be worth a look.

straps are a very good idea
and i think for bench i can just rest the bar on my thumb pad?? thanks for the reply. The Top index finger joint has the pin in it.

See if you can lift now. Can't? Wait until it's healed. It's simple.

If you go back to it and it hurts, stop. Otherwise, keep at it. Be careful, is all.

doesn't most grip strength come from the pinky finger?

pin in the finger... ouch :worried:
ya now the pain killers are wearing off, it really hurts :)

Indeed, it sucks. I've just gone from taking a few days out due to a troubling hamstring to taking more than a week out due to a stomach infection straight into a sprained ankle which might keep me out of the gym for another two or three weeks.

There's nothing you can do that won't make it worse besides rest up and wait for it to heal.

i'd probly stay away from the any lift in which you have to grip a BB/DB... it sucks, but thats life, gotta take the shit when it comes.

Try to be optimistic about it. Take this opportunity to squat your ass off. Squat three times a week. Become known at your gym for being the "squat guy". Box squat, ATF squat, DE squat. I believe you'll see more results than you think.

I love it when someone asks me at the gym what I'm planning to do today. My stock reply has become, "Just the usual, squats". Most guys glaze over at that point or mention that they did legs day already but I finally had someone ask me what my 1RM was and he also asked how often I deadlift. There is life on other planets.

I was planning on doing the 5x5, except only the squat part... good idea? when my freezing wore off it hurt SO much! i havent slept. i just took 3 more t3's...

You can also do good mornings and, maybe, zercher squats. Reverse hypers should be ok and take the chance to work your abs more than usual.

Maybe do Monday as your volume day where you do 10 sets or so of 5 reps. Wednesday do your light, speed (or box squat day) for 10 sets of 2. And on Friday make it your heavy day with about 5 sets of 3 reps with about 3 minutes rest in between each set.

Of course you can train just squats.....that 5x5 routine isn't a way of life so much as it is a template (intended to be an idiot-proof template) to teach people how to train themselves properly.

Think of this as a blessing in disguise. Take the time to build up your squat, it was too close to your bench anyway. Take 6 months and add 100lbs to your squat if you have to. That is very realistic for a 19 year old kid to do. Do lots of ab work and really build up the good mornings. The leg and core strength will be good for everything, when you return to deadlifting, it will probably be stronger than before with all the leg and core strength. And bench is bench, and rows are rows.....you'll already be well trained and conditioned when you come back to them, just start light and ramp 20lbs a week for 4 weeks if you have to, they always come right back.

I love you dude, you make really good points. I'll take the 6 weeks off for upper body then, make sure it heals nicely.

So wait, it's just your index finger?

I just tried to mimic the hand position of doing a #1 sign and still grabbing a bar like to bench. I think it's possible. I mean you're not gripping it so much as it's just resting on your palms and your finger are just kind of keeping it there.

I mean, I wouldn't go super heavy, and I'd always have a spotter, but I'd do it.

People might be like, who is that weirdo who keeps saying he's "Number One" while he's benching? He's not even benching that much!

But looking like a fool in the gym has never stopped me. I'm the only guy who does deadlifts and clean and jerks at my gym. There is this pull-up bar bolted to the ceiling of the little free weight area, and I totally knocked a loaded barbell (just 135#) on it on a clean and jerk once.
