A question about Superman

Ok, he can hold his breath to infinity. (supposingly). He has no bodily needs for food and water. He can fly through the sun and survive.

So why he have to have a job? Think about it.... what does he have to buy? Not food? He doesn't have to pay rent because he can fly up in the astmosphere and "float" while sleeping.

So why he need to work?

To appear human while monitoring the world's troubles so he could save the day.

Property tax maing.... He doesn't want anyone in the world to know who he is so he can "almost" lead a normal, "human" life. He basically just wants to fit in

You obviously have never seen kill bill 2.

Bill had a SICK speech at the end of that movie with regards to superman. I nearly nutted my pants after hearing it.

Basically, clark kent is superman's licsence to live on earth. It's his secret identity that he works under. He's a superhero first (since birth) and an everyday person second. So he operates one way in order to consistently operate another.

It was an insightful speech. Especially the part about Clark Kent being a reflection of Supermans view on humanity.

I think the answer to the original question is that Clark Kent is Supermans way of interacting with humanity. As Superman he is by definition something apart from humanity.

I feel terrible for raising this but on the same day of 9/11 my mate hit me with the superman joke, "Why didn`t superman save the world trade centre? Because he`s paralysed from the neck down!" Sorry for any offence

The rays from the sun are all he needs to kep him alive. He does not need to eat or breath to extract energy from matter. He can absorb the sun's energy direcly.

imdb.com...

Bill: An essential characteristic of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero, and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When he wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic that Superman stands alone. Superman did not become Superman, Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears, the glasses, the business suit, that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent? He's weak, he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race. Sort of like Beatrix Kiddo and Mrs. Tommy Plympton.

He has superhuman powers, not infinite powers.

BTW, I've been in this argument before, but I was on a skateboard and was wearing PF Flyers.

I didn't say his powers were to infinity. I said he could hold his breath to infinity. Just like BRR said he really doesn't have a need to breath as the sun powers him.

he can flick peanuts and break shit with them. you all fucking wish you could flick a fucking peanut and fucking break something with it. all of you.....

its a comic book people stop analyzing everything.... jeeze it was made for kids that dont think of those things.

Are you kidding? What kid doesn't think of these things? We always wondered how much fun he must have had in the sack with Lois and that super dick.

Basically if he were just Superman all the time and not also Clark (and have the apartment, normal job and life, etc) he would go insane or become evil. To have all that power and nothing else to balance it out would be too much.

Wrong.

He was born Kal-el, and did not have superpowers on Krypton. He did not fly or wear a cape. After "moving" to earth, he became Clark Kent as an infant after he was adopted/discovered. Realized later that he had powers due to earth's yellow sun vs Krypton's red. He grew up as Clark Kent and didn't become Superman until many years later.
