My first meet. Competing completely raw – not even a belt or wraps – and in spongy Asics running shoes!

I weighed in at 80.3kg (176.67lbs) to make the 82.5kg weight class easily. I think my scales might be a bit heavy.

Squat
Happy with how things went here. I’ve only ever hit 160kg (352lbs) in training. Still there is plenty of room for improvement, nonetheless.
1. 150kg (330lbs) – Very easy opener
2. 160kg (352lbs) – Straight-forward enough.
3. 165kg (363lbs) – Meet and gym PR. Struggled, but got there in the end. Felt a lot slower and harder than it looks on film.

Bench Press
Talk about a disaster! Competition technique completely threw me off my game and I’m quite annoyed about it. It is a completely different ball game than a gym lift, and I think the bench is most afftected.
1. 120kg (264lbs) – Miss. Horrible! I put it up like it was nothing, but my feet weren’t flat on the ground according to the IPF rules, my pause wasn’t long enough AND I racked before the command.
2. 125kg (275lbs) – Meet PR. Very easy. I was conservative and decided to make sure I got a lift in because I didn’t want to bomb out. I got the competition form and commands right this time. After my opener I always was going to!
3. 135kg (297lbs) – Miss. Stalled off my chest and there was no moving it. My pause at the bottom felt like an absolute eternity, but when I asked guys after the lift they said it was about right. A lot of adjustment is required here. A shirt will help SO much.

Deadlift
The highlight for me given I didn’t expect to go three from three, let alone put up a PR.
1. 175kg (385lbs) – Fast and easy.
2. 185kg (407lbs) – More difficult but not hard.
3. 195kg (429lbs) – Meet and gym PR. Tough, but I locked it out quite well even though my grip was weakening. Believe it or not, I’d never used chalk before today and if it wasn’t for it I would’ve dropped this one.

Overall
Totalled 480kg (1056lbs) which was about where I thought I’d be. It was enough to take out my weight class for the U23s and make me state champion. Right now I’m barely satisfied. I’m pleased that I’ve been introduced to the sport, but my eyes are fixed upon bigger and better things.

I am going to train with the club run out of my university. I’m not sure what the coach is like, but the most important thing is that there are some VERY strong guys who’ll I’ll be able to train with. There’s a 22-3 year old heading to the world juniors next year in South Africa. With another 100kg (220lbs) to my total, I’ll qualify for that level of competition. Right now it seems a long way off... Give me the right equipment, some focused training and a bit of luck, and I’ll be on my way to Fort Wayne in 2005 and Sofia, Bulgaria in 2006. Those are my long-term goals.

I had the best time today and met some GREAT people :)

All I want for Christmas is a fully outfitted powerlifting equipment "wardrobe", lolol.

ROCK OUT ZANDER

Through added strength and equipment... I have added around 200lbs to my total since May... you can EASILY do the same.

Now focus.. and tear shit up.

Good for you man.

And.. somebody PLEASE give Zander karma for me, I can't hit him again yet :(

Hey were there lots of people there?

Interesting they have it on a Sunday. Saturday would be better, the extra day for recovery comes in handy :)
