1st Powerlifting Meet

Here is some video shot at the first meet of the High School team I am coaching. It is a first year program, and none of the kids have powerlifted before, and some of them have never participated in any form of athletics. At this meet, we took a 1st, 3rd and 4th, and my 2, 220's came within 50 lbs of qualifying for state. Our next meet is 1/9/2010.

Unfortunately, my camera ran out of battery before we got to the pulling.

I'm the guy walking around in the orange Inzer shirt.

sick bro, i wish my school did powerlifting, I actually dont think there is even a league of high school PLing in england...

what weights did the 1st, 3rd and 4th lift?

I don't know about everyone else, but that guy in the orange inzer shirt looks like a beast!!!!:D I'm just curious, since I don't know of any highschool powerlifting where I live, what were some of the lifts that took good placing for the 181 male class?

We didn't have anyone competing in 181 so I wasn't really paying attention. Sorry.

The 1st came from the 142lb'er in the video. IIRC he squatted 205, Benched 170 & pulled 295. The 3rd place squatted 325, benched 270, & deadlifed 505. The 4th squatted 425 (this was his come out, but he was so nervous he red lighted his first 2 tries - I had him set to go to 510), benched 260, $ deadlifted 370. The 4th place kids did all that RAW while the others were equipped except for shirts - they aren't allowed.

What weight classes were the 3rd and 4th places from? Interesting how the 4th placer had a higher squat than deadlift raw. Damn I wish I had a powerlifting team, it looks like so much fun:evil:

Thanks everyone.

We are competing again on 1/9. This time as a whole team. In the first meet, there were some "late comers" that just weren't ready. Now they all have put in enough time to compete. Even my 17 yo daughter who can only squat 135 bench 70 and DL 200! Since 2nd grade she has been a softball catcher, so you can imagine the strength change for her - she has never lifted before now. As I said before, there are a few who have never done anything athletic in their lives. My SHW is 5'7 @ 380, and you can imagine what kind of shape he is in, but he shows up every day and busts his ass. He's dropped 7 lbs and his lifts have improved by at least 40%. The other day he texted me saying that no matter what he is going to get a 375 squat at the meet for his 3rd attempt if I let him try. I have no idea if he will be able to, but how to you curb that kind of enthusiasm from a kid who did nothing but play video games and eat Doritos?

Do I get a charge out of guys like my 2, 220's who are both sophomores that can both squat and pull in the 500's and one has a good shot at breaking the state DL record? Hell yes I do! But to be honest, I get an even better feeling about potentially changing the lives of guys like my SHW.

Nice! That's very inspirational bro...props!

Nice job man! I'd chew some butt with those spotter at times. They made ME nervous. Those kids are gonna remember this stuff forever! Nice investment COACH! :)

good shit. erick keeps buckeling his knees in. im glad to hear your team is doing so well so early. it says a lot about you.

We've been working hard on that. The football condition program had them narrow stance squatting, so a wide stance, knees out form was (and I am still fighting this from other coaches of "real" sports) discouraged.

I bout some extra batteries for the camcorder, so hopefully this Saturday I can get more tape.

Thanks for the compliments. I like to think I know what I am doing when I am dealing with me, or pretending to be a guru on the internet, but coaching is a completely different challenge.

OK, here is an update. We had another meet this past weekend and basically rocked the house.

Here is how we did. The columns should be read by weight class, squat, bench, dead, total.

142 lb 275 140 300 715 8th

220 lb 465 255 485 1205 2nd (this one is 15, and missed a 525 pull because his hand got hung on his suit and screwed his grip.

220 lb 510 235 455 1200 3rd

220 lb(JV) 340 240 425 1005 3rd

242 lb 320 205 475 1000 2nd

SHW (360) 315 205 365 885 3rd

Girls

242 lbs 235 120 240 595 2nd

198 lbs 205 85 255 545 3rd

181 lbs 135 85 220 435 5th

So far the hardest progress has come from the girls bench. But I think that is just the nature of being a girl. There is no 220 class and that girl who lifted at 242 was only 201. If she drops to 198 and puts 30 more lbs on her total she will qualify for state.

The 2 varsity 220's both qualified for state by a wide margin. The one that got the 510 squat is getting moved to 242 since he is having a hard time staying down anyway and the totals for that class are pretty similar to the 220s - his total qualified him for 242 anyway. He had 560 in him for a squat but I held him back for placing purposes - if he missed he would have dropped to 4th and we would have lost team points. If the other one had made that 525 pull he would have taken 1st by 10 lbs, but had a lock on 2nd so I let him go for it. He obviously has it, he just got his grip broken.

Nice! Their squats and deadlifts are pretty strong but in my opinion their bench needs some work. I would think at state there are going to be lots of 220's benching 315+ easy. Great stuff though. Lol you can tell they are coached by you when their squats and deads are really high but not so much their benches:)

Also, what kind of gear are they allowed to use? Is it belt and singlet or more?

dude you got some freaks at your school - 15y/o capable of 500+ deadlift and a 142lb kid hitting a 300lb dead :eek2:

They are allowed a single ply suit and 2m knee wraps for squats, a suit for deads, and must wear a singlet for bench. Power belts may be worn for all lifts but they may be no thicker than 13mm and made of leather. Wrist wraps are optional and may be no longer than 12". Bench shirts are not allowed until they get to nationals.

As a reference, here is a link to the boys Wisconsin state records. For 200 it looks like the bench is 400 lbs.

I was really surprised at their benches too. It has taken a lot of work to get where they are. The biggest issue has been the last half of the press to lockout. It seems that their triceps are the weak point as a rule. Plus they are having a hard time with the concepts of big arches, and tucking their elbows. IMHO I can teach a squat or a dead in about 10 min, but the bench seems to be the most complex of all the lifts for me to coach. That said, even when I was a PLer, it was my weakest point by far too.

At that same meet, the younger bother of a good friend of mine pulled 610 totally clean in the 181 weight class.

If you look at the national records, many are from Wisconsin. It must because they are all farm boys and used to throwing around heavy stuff from an early age.

Wow they aren't far off the deadlift and squat records! If the sophmore keeps it up it looks like he is on track to break state records for squat and dead by senior year easy:biggrin::evil: I agree about the bench, it took a while for me to get the idea of tucking the elbows, and my leg drive is still less than optimal. What are those guys lifting raw? BTW, the thing that helped my bench the most was just ltos of volume and low reps, no secrets there:)

Knock about 30-50 lbs off those totals for their raw max.

Your right about that sophomore. The 242 is the same age too.

They are going to be friggin beasts when they are seniors!

Whats really cool is that the kid you mentioned also strongman trains in the summer with our crew, so he is incredibly functionally strong as well. This past football season he hit 2 guys so hard in one game that their helmets flew off their heads.
