If the United States were invaded, would you enlist?

I'm just curious, how many of you have actually fought a war, or know someone who did or died in a war, or even have held a gun? :) It' easy to speculate, but when push comes to shove, it's a whole different animal. I understand sense of patriotism, but from someone who comes from a third world country, who was raised during war, and lived through war, both foreign and domestic, and have "experienced" war, I'm telling you, it's quite different when it's on your own soil and it's coming for you.

Im ex USMC and know my way around the standard issue M-16A2 service rifle.

so i can't decipher this, are you saying that those claiming they would join up and be heros would really be pussies and run...or that those saying they wouldn't join up really would have no other choice but to do so?
and glad you could make it to n/america, hopefully it is peaceful here

i'm saying to feel patriotic and responsible is admirable and welcomed, but when you have an army shooting at you and trying to invade your land because they were given orders, and you have to put on army clothes, grab a gun and play soldier boy, it's a whole diff story....you're going to get yourself killed, no offense.

I come from a country were we know and understand war like its a bed time story. That's not a good thing at all. I am so happy I'm in Canada. The day I become Canadian and get my citizenship will be the proudest day of my life. Not saying I do not respect and still hold dear where I come from, but I hate that if war comes near, I know more about how to survive and fight that everyone on this board. I witnessed 4 wars...can you even comprehend that? I survived 3 invasions of my country and 1 civil war. The things I've seen are horrid, grotesque, and unequivocally unnecessary. Shit that makes you lose your appetite. Permanently. So when I see people talk about how they're going to take up arms and fights, excuse me while I call bullshit. Go back to your quite, respectful and admirable lives...you need not worry about your country being invaded. It's the US that does all the invading. Nam, Iraq, etc....trust me orb, it's poor sorry countries like mine that get hammered and it's people like me who lose families and land....countries like the US will never experience that. You're safe.

yeah...I honestly can't even pretend to comprehend war on my own soil...this actually comes up a lot in my house

but more along the lines of..."well sure they use every means necessary to defend themselves...we invaded their country, what would you do?"

probably proof that neither of us it suited for military anymore

The flaw in this line of reasoning is that you have to save yourself in order to save her, because you have no way to ascertain that your sacrifice was effective, after the fact.

Well there's no way of knowing if I was put into a meat grinder on the front lines I'd have done anything, and I wouldn't have had the time I would have being with her until the end.

There are other ways to serve your nation's interests / fulfill your patriotic duty in the event of invasion other than picking up a rifle.
