Caught the last matinée today with the gf, we both thought it wasn't bad. Actually I was surprised at how well done the first half was. But ironically just like the characters in the story, I ended up feeling sleep deprived by the time it was over. The ending was also a head shaker, relying on a tactic that's becoming far too trendy in remakes of super villain horror flicks. But given their subject matter it's not surprising, or disappointing.
Haley as Freddy can never replace Englund obviously, but he played him as almost the polar opposite, and nailed the darker, more sinister tone as well as Englund did his original version.
Also, best sound design in a horror flick by far. Meant to be heard in surround with good low end capacity. All in all it's one of the few remakes I enjoyed more than the original.
Everyone usually says how much better the original is, but this one just felt like the more mature version of the story. Nothing against the original; it was made in a different era of horror flicks. But even if this remake was made side by side the original back then I'd personally prefer the darker tone of this new one.
