Oh they work great when you take em out in your backyard and fire off a couple rounds, but take em into a gunbattles and you're asking for it apparently. Can a gun expert please for fucking christ sake explain to me why american rifles are such utter useless garbage yet toga & turban wearing terrorists are rolling with a 60 year old rifle that you can shit down the barrell and it will still fire.....???

A dude in my hometown that I know from high school went into the seals, he's out now but every couple years I see him around and we chat.....he told me that the seals change out their weapons like every 6 months for this reason. Especially the m-60's. Last I talked to him he was just getting out, said that they were considering going to the FN version of the m-60 because it was like 10000 rounds till you had a problem that could be fixed on the battlefield and like 20000 rounds on average before you had a catastrophic failure. The m-60 has a catastrophic failure on average within 3000 rounds, if I remember these figures correctly. They may not be exact, but they're close. It's bullshit though that the standard issue rifle is this bad, it's unacceptable.

I don't know much about military guns, but any firearm requires excellent maintenance. I wonder if perhaps the Afghans take maintenance much more seriously because they know that guns are harder for them to get. Although I would hate to imagine that special forces troops would fail to properly care for their rifle.
Also, our government gives out military contracts based on politics and not necessarily the best quality product. That's why there have been about 20 US soldiers die in Iraq from electrocution due to faulty wiring on the bases by KBR, the Halliburton subsidiary. No other company was even allowed to bid on the contract for the work on constructing bases.

I could be wrong, but I'm going to bet those couple platoons stationed out in BFE afghanistan with the nearest american base miles and miles away..........are taking "exquisite" care of their firearms. For one they've got nothing else to do all day but clean their guns and watch the hills for turban tops.

of course, and the next company will lobby the military for the contract and put out subpar product and it'll be another 15-20 years before the military comes to the conclusion that this rifle is also crap. What astounds me is that this is well known by the experts even before the guys go into battle. They train with these guns and they KNOW they don't stand up to a big firefight where the rounds have to be pumping. If I was a soldier in the U.S military I'd be rigging my weapon with battery powered heatsinks. So what if it weighs more, the fucker will last another couple minutes before overheating which could mean my life. Either that or I'd cary an AK as standy. Fucked!

despite the fact that I bristle at civilians discussing anything military...without it soldiers wouldnt get jack-shit so......
I will explain a cpl of small things about the service:

firearms are cleaned and maintained by those they are issued to
some soldiers are lazy pieces of shit (blue falcons to boot)...some arent mileage may vary on the weapon
for some reason the military love love lovesssss disassembling weapons, constantly, incessantly, this helps wear them out
you dont keep the same weapon the entire time, its turned into armory and is constantly circulated through different peeps
the sand is like talcum powder and gets into anything powder can get into...ad that to gun oil....nice lapping compound
and the people that repair them dont tend to be "experts" of any kind, but were simply assigned the mos based on their asvab/skills testing which is not the most awesomely accurate thing Ive ever seen given its multiple choice-ness.
my asvab happened to think I pwn at electrical repair, I dont, I suck , dont ever ask me to solder anything, ever. I am in fact a medic and was some 6 yrs before I enlisted.
also, the all knowing DoD buys the lowest bid for weaponry and frankly, everything else...let me reitterate here what a POS a 9mm is but its a cheap weapon with cheap ammo
and P.S. the military could give a FUCK how many soldiers die/injured because of poorly performing equip (anyone know anything about heat stroke from fuckin acu's?? hmm? anyone? but man they blend with cubicles well)

also my husband works in the aerospace and defense field, their weaponry is routinely bought by other countries but not the US because its expensive and high tech
they are working on a pretty interesting project these days that specifically geared towards safety/defense rather than offense that would really save lives ......meh I digress.
the military has had non us made/designed pieces of shit that screw up too...I doubt the other side isnt having weapons difficulty

AK's are solid, need little maintenance and never die. That's just a fact.

There have been AKs pulled out of jungle swamps and desert sand pits that fired without cleaning after kicking the breach open on the first try. My 9th grade teacher told me that.

the current rifles are direct impingement LWRCI™ has engineered a complete solution to the deficits found in the direct impingement M16/AR15/M4 family of rifles and carbines. These barrels can take a lot more use and abuse than a standard barrel before any degradation in accuracy or loss of velocity. NiCorr™ surface conversion has proved more lubricious, harder wearing, more heat and corrosion resistant than the hard chrome normally used in the bore. Our barrels can handle 20,000 rounds before replacement, as compared to 6,000-10,000 rounds on a standard M4.

And finally, in one of the most recent upgrades to our rifles, the bolt carriers of all M6™ rifles are now coated with a proprietary nickel coating that nearly eliminates corrosion while providing greatly increased lubricity. This coating provides permanent lubrication to the moving parts. This nickel coating is similar to that being used by the US Army Research Lab and USSOCOM to extend the service life of their weapons systems.

All I can say is that I have fired thousands of rounds from old ass M-60's back in the day without issues..the entire battalion....I'm talking Vietnam era weapons. I've also fired thousands of rounds from old ass M-16A1's without incident. Perhaps the squid armorers don't know how to maintain the weapons like the Army.
