What I don't understand is why there isn't just a simple flat tax, no loopholes, no excuses, no shelters, and call it a day. Oh, and just have everything taken out of our weekly paychecks and be done with it, instead of this mad scramble once a year.

The magic number is 51%. Once more people don't pay taxes than do, they can vote themselves anything they want.

This isn't about mean-spirited Republican big business. It also isn't about limousine liberal Democratic feel-good handouts. This is about social justice and spreading the wealth to the least of us.

If you pay taxes now, you can either pay more or you can give up and become one of the downtrodden.

I think it's a more complicated and insidious than that. All the loopholes and shelters, and sheer complication of the thing, actually benefit really rich people and big corporations, not your average "everyman" or small business owner.

What were they talking, 17% to 19% as a flat one? You know what? My husband and I already pay that! How many big corporations and rich people pay 19% of their income in taxes?

The top 1% of earners pay 40% of the income taxes. If the system is setup to benefit the really rich, it's not doing a very good job.
