Who here do you think has or would join a cult?

my sister in law is an easy prey. she is very involved with a group right now that seems pretty cult like.
she's weak minded, lonely, and gullible.

this is kind of ironic that you posted on the topic army vet....

One of my primary research areas is investor psychology. Thinks like investor herding, overconfidence and other psychological biases. I find the topic very interesting.

Cults have always interested me. I always wondered how intelligent people can do something so foolish. The recent election and the adoration regarding Obama is one manifestation of this psychological anomaly. People never learn and they are highly susceptible to things like cults. I would love to see one from the inside.

thats cool....

you missed my point

but the psychology behind why otherwise intelligent people would join a cult....
thats cool

The military is definitely a form of a cult. I was clearly "mentally conditioned" when I left boot camp. lol Over time I changed back. Some things do stay with you forever though.

I actually feel weird and like I do not belong when I go on post now. That is a strange feeling.

for a while I actually preferred to stand at parade rest

and I feel like a sham if I even so much as wear a cover cuz its handy...I do not however call it a hat :)

anyway...explain why you think cult behavior could be exploited for investor manipulation...

besides the obvious...manipulate someone to do exactly as you say without a brown round, bars or stars....

yeah, Im an in cult, under a democratic president

but Id like to join a fucked up crew, more along the lines of the mob or gun runners or something

Remember, a cult is a group of people that gather together to worship a higher being....
That said, if you belong to any religion, you belong to a cult.

AND.......

3 for 3 in the bookie bitchez!! Cha-Fucking-Ching!!!!

Wodin is currently involved in a gay cult. I know what you are thinking..don't. He's moved on. So he likes to play the game soap on a rope...who cares. Support the old bastard and let everything be.

Cult behavior is somewhat similar to investor biases regarding analysts. Investors are very susceptible the opinions of others, for example stock analysts. That is well documented in the finance literature. This behavior is believed to be one of the causes of stock market bubbles. Over time, people ignore fundamental data (i.e. the true value of stocks) and follow the opinions of others. Eventually, prices overreact, causing a bubble. Eventually investors wake up and the bubble crashes. Bubbles have been happening for over 300 years. People blame the government, banks, and whoever else they can point a finger at. The true underlying cause of bubbles boils down to the individuals that ignored reality and chased an imaginary return. Cult leaders do the same. They create an environment that caters to the individual psychological needs of the cult members. Eventually it can lead to destruction.

Musclemom
Well, fuck you very much.

As a matter of fact, the reason I'm a member of a pagan spiritual path is because I find organized religion pathetically mindless. You can't be a sheeple and be a good pagan.

I have a friend who is a high-ranking muckity-muck in The Church of the Subgenius.

One day in the 1970s he was "between homes", walking the sidewalk in Dallas, and it started raining. He was thinking about stepping in front of the next bus when he spotted a flyer that said "Now is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a lucrative new cult."

Not all relgion is cult like. IF you are following someone or even look up to someone who says they and only they have contact with God then you are on the slippery slope to a cult.

MsCinduLou I have been drinking so yu will forgive what I am about to say as it is NOT an afront to you personally.

Your heart is tremendous.

Your intentions are honorable.

Your loyalty is fierce.

But by your definition you are pretty much describing ALL christians.

If there is a god I have NO DOUBT you are going to heaven because YOU are such a good person

But you are too brilliant to be limited by the negative asshole leaches that cling onto Christianity.

Interestingly enough No One said I would JOIN a cult. I find this to be praise of the highest order. Means that I could begin MY OWN CULT.

Good news is that anyone in my *cult* would never be MADE to stay because of guilt or retribution and there would be ZERO focus on negative bullshit mindcontrol.

all this from a woman who is admittedly impaired as she typed.

Based on what you are wearing in your avi I could get you to join a cult...the Shriners! Give you a damn bell and make you raise money for my dirty deeds. I just need to find a silly hat for you to wear.

best oxymoron I've ever heard in my life. Eat shit jackangel.

That's be me. I am a walking talking living breathing contradiction. :)

BTW - I am seriously thinking about beginning my own cult/supplemental religion. Posted up about it on the religion/philosophy board. (not kidding)

Army Vet - I will have to change my avi so you can see if one of the *silly hats* I already own will pass muster.

Most 'religions' especially the ones that have been born out of Christianity could be considered cults. So I would think that there are hundreds of thousands of people who belong to cults.

GOP fanboys are damn near close to cult status, especially the ones drinking the Fox News Koolaid.
