why was this twilight movie so popular?

MILF's and their daughters love vampires.

Vampires have a long cultural history in human civilization, I watched Buffy and Angel.

Nobody in this movie can act their way out of a nutsack.
The twats who drool over this book/flick grow up to be women who get wet over Harlequin Romance novels.

Fucking vegetarian vampires that fall in love and want to have sex, what the hell kind of shit is that?!? The UNDEAD don't FUCK ...

From an objective point of view, it's essentially Romeo and Juliet repackaged.

i haven't seen or read the books, but the books are supposed to be awesome, lots of fans so naturally one would see the movie.

I'm a huge Harry potter fan, loved the series. the movies weren't all that but i still went to see them....

this movies only saving grace is how cute the girl is.

says who?

The series finale, "Not Fade Away" wrapped it up...when confronted with certain death..."I want to slay the dragon." :)

says who?
Sex is for reproduction, it's at the very essence of life. Vampires reproduce with the bite, through the taking of life.

well if that is the case, screw being a vampire

3/4 of market revolves around 12 to 20 year old demograph. Spent a record 150 billion in 2006. There will be more Esoteric Dawson's Creeek on the way.

Never even heard of it until the other day when a friend mentioned it on their status message..Lol
I am bad with new releases.

The movie was geared for teens, and if I was a teen Im sure I would have loved it. I found the Bella chick to be annoying, in the books and 10 times more in the movie. She was indifferent and snobby in the movie when she was supposed to be gentle, naive, innocent and clumsy. I guess Amanda Edwards (?) only knows how to be a twat.

I read the books and liked them and went to the movie hoping it would be darker/more sexual. But its a teen flick so you cant expect much.

I think the character Jacob as way more attractive than Edward, who the teens just SWOON over.

I dunno. I like Vampire stuff. I think the idea of vampires are kinda sexy, even without the sex. Like a bite could be orgasmic or something pleasureable..even though you lose your soul

The first season of Dawson's Creek was a classic!

Screw Emo Vampires. Twilight = bad for the vampire genre.

lol MM - I happen to like the book. I don't think I'm a "twat" nor do I get into romance novels. I have a pretty broad spectrum of books ranging from silly mush like this to classics. Not every book has to be brain surgery to read to be enjoyable.

As far as silly twats, I was primarily talking about those fools ranging in age from 12 to 40+ they were interviewing for the trailers who were literally screaming like teenagers at a Beatles concert.

I refuse to read the book on an ethical basis. The series was written by someone who has no appreciation of horror and has never read horror or seen a horror movie (because they're either too gross or they frighten her). I'm old school vampire, they rip your throat out and turn you into dinner, maybe tear the still beating heart out of your chest and drain the blood out of that for good measure. Vampires ideally don't have emotions, they're the animated dead, but if they must have emotions they're only supposed to be predatory not love sick

I agree 100%.

MM, when you get the chance watch "Let the Right one In." It is a classic.

Congrats. You don't fit the demographic that made the movie so popular.
My 12 yr old daughter loved the books, was a little disappointed in the movie but still enjoyed it.
MM did you just call my girl a twat?

Er, not to belabor the obvious but as I happen to be in possession of one I feel I'm allowed to use the word and apply it to the rest of my sisters, much the way black people are allowed to use the N word when referring to themselves or others of their race :qt:

One of the first full length novels I read, when I was 10 or so, was a vampire romance where the male leading character was a teenage vampire who fought against his darker nature and only fed on animals, and fell in love with a human girl. There were obviously conflicts with "bad" vampires who saw humans as nothing more than food, etc. I guess twilight is a little nostalgic for me because of the similarities.

You have to keep in mind that twilight, like the books I read (which incidentally have been rereleased recently and got picked up as a pilot on the CW - fitting), is a young adult novel. She was writing it for young girls. It ended up having a bigger mass appeal than that, but for the genre, the level of violence you want without some sort of redeeming character as well just wouldn't have sold to the target audience.

I'm not a vampire but i'll bit your neck...:chomp::biggrin:

I think that just came from that being a serious erogenous zone on most people. I'll even admit to it myself. A properly administered bite to that area can make my eyes roll back....lol

yeah, they were super easy reads. With each book I was done within a day so it really wasnt much of a commitment to sit down and read the books.

I asked my mom, who watched it last night, how was it?
She loved it.

I think the author, who is a genius, and has an imagination that cuts through time and space...
Jack Angel posted up her speech at last year's Harvard graduation..
It was awesome, awesome to the point that it made me feel shallow.
I can't say she just had it though... one thing I'm learning is that 'talent' is developed through practice, she paid her dues. She wasn't a slacker, but learned about self sacrifice and suffering on a level I can't fathom... through her imagination, when she was dirt poor she took solace in those less fortnuate, and through this broke through the limiting ego and self concern that is a limiting device in us all, her imagination like tripled up in potency.
It was an amazing speech.. to the point that, hell I got envious...
Anyway... that's my Twilight Anecdote for yall.
Getting past your self really does transform karms... big time.

Like I said, teenage girls and moms eat that shit up. :)

lol, you know, I never liked that show. They removed all the sex appeal of vampires by making them turn ugly whenever they got bloodthirsty.

True blood, on the other hand, was addicting.

we are watching it right now, here at work

The premise was pretty clear...it started with Angel, the show I really liked was Angel but Buffy became all about Spike and Buffy...Spikes redemption came from his love of Buffy and that's traditional propaganda.

the buffy movie was better

lol, sounds cheesy. Some bad guys should stay bad guys. I just mean there has to be "the bad guys" and "the good guys" in stories targeted for the tween group. All bad/evil/blood and gore is not going to draw in the 12 year old.

amanda edwards is a snobby cunt. robert pattinson is a closet fag. the whole series is such a departure from the true vampire culture. you want teen vampires, you watch the lost boys. you want cardboard cutouts of what the 10 - 21 year olds are being bombarded with as being the essence of importance, watch these self indulgent, ego manical movies which spread the poison that has crippled america to what we are today. the i is never more important than the we and these "stars" eminate nothing more than me, me, me, me, me, me, me. this country is fucked and this movie is a celebration of that movement. thanks baby boomers for having such spoiled, rotten, insecure, maladjusted children.

Will you marry me, Muslcemom?!

My poor daughters... all of them, hormones surging throughout their entire bodies and NOT ONE ADULT to smack them like Cher did Nicolas Cage in the movie "Moonstruck" when he told her that he loved her:

SNAP OUT OF IT

I literally had my two youngest daughters (12 and 13) asking me why they felt a certain way (not sex, but attraction and fascination) about a movie/book - why they couldn't control their emotions even though they KNEW WITH THEIR HEAD that those emotions had ZERO BASIS in anything rational or real...

*sigh*

Don't you think you're gettng a little too heated and overanalyzing when it comes to some books you find in the young adult section of barnes and noble?

Vampires are fictional so by that very nature there cannot be a right or wrong version. And every movie and book has had a different take on them. In some, they have sex. in others, they don't. In some they can't cross running water. In others, they have little restrictions. In some garlic will keep them at bay, in others, it will just make you smell funky. in some, they can go out in the day if they are weak, in others, they can't - ever. in some they can turn into other animals, in others, they cannot.

The idea of blending sex and vampires has gone back a long long long time. it's a natural comparison. There's penetration, sucking, and erogenous zones involved. In the book Dracula, those vampires have sex.

People need to relax...it's four books of harmless fiction written for the appeal of teenage girls.

i was honestly joking about most of it. the thing that really bothers me is the media forcing the actors/actresses down out throats. they arent very pleasant looking and they are harry potter for vampires. which makes it lame and a biter. the rest was a rant. im sorry you wasted the time thinking about that whole response.

no dude you were 199% right in your rant. It makes me sad that there are legitimately talented actors and actresses out there.....:whatever:

Only the first line was even responding to you.

Red, I've read hundreds and hundreds of books...only a small fraction had anything to do with the supernatural.

Well I can only speak for myself but though I dig my men (man) pasty white and ten days older than dirt - he would never harm me in any way and worships the ground I walk on.

... and I intend to keep it that way. ;)

I'm not gonna watch twilight.
I have to say I did dig interview with a vampire. Thought the concept that most vampire's can't change, cause they don't have a 'human soul' and that what makes us more or less human is our ability to change, which means adapt through emotion. To feel. The vampires were static conditional beings. I thought that was pretty poignant.

Underworld I love, the concept that Wolves were slaves once, and the aristocracy and narcissim of the vampires was pretty kewl to me.
The idea of a hybrid the sum being totally transcendent of the parts... very kewl indeed.
Also The chic in that, and the role she played as assertive rebel, and not traditional subservient female, was pretty kewl.

Yup. I thought the wolves were kewl, but didn't know why the movie had to display them as heathenish, like they couldn't be just as aristocratic as teh vampires.
I get the juxtaposition, but I guess since I really dug the leader of the wolves and identified with him more than I did the 'hero; pretty boy.
I was pissed off that they were portrayed as well, Steroid Meat Head types. Kinda like the old stereotypes that are dying out exponentially today in culture,
quicker than we are aware of.

Yeah, there's my vampire rant.

The fact that you guys are still talking about this movie only makes it more powerful.

LOL.....true...

For the record...I liked the underlying theme of "Angel" that you fight the good fight even though you know you're going to lose the war.:)

what are you talking about? did you see the cover of Vanity Fair-
http://cdn.buzznet.com/media-cdn/jj1/headlines/2009/03/seth-rogen-paul-rudd-vanity-fair-cover.jpg

thats young Hollywood & theyre in practically every movie this yr ;)

my point exactly. Nothing against Rogen, he's a good writer......but he "SUCKS" as an actor. His best roles are supporting roles, like in superbad. WHenever I see a movie where he stars in, I know it's going to blow. Zack and Miri was maybe the only movie I tolerated him in where he had a decently big role..........but like I wanted to throw a stick of dynamite at the screen watching pineapple express. Pure shit.

Getting back on topic...

I just watched the movie and thought it was pretty bad. The two main actors did not pull me in at all and while it is very hard to convey the emotion that the book puts across on a screen, they could have done a much better job. The books, however are excellently written and you can read them in a day.

This whole phenomenon is a little disturbing though. You now have 12-15 year old girls who already have a sense of self entitlement about things being exposed to a display of intense love and devotion at a very young age - which they are never going to get in real life from any boy their age unless they are lying to get into their pants. If I had a daughter I would be very worried about her future expectation level concerning relationships after seeing this and reading the books.

The scene where the vampire and girl start making out and then she tries to pull him on top of her was almost disturbing considering she was half naked and they were alone in her bedroom after he had snuck in. This girl is supposed to be 16 and she was the aggressor. Not something I would want my daughter thinking is okay because while the vampire in the movie stopped, no 17 year old kid would.

Blade 2, might be the best conceptually constructed vampire film in recent times.
Multidimensional in it's themes. The focus of the film was not even on Blade.
The sort of conspiracy that is common in hierarchies, nations's seeking domination was present: the experiments on his own son, you had an uneasy partnershp between Blade and vampires, you had a heroine that was perfect for the role she played, she may have been more convincing than Kate Beckinsdale in UnderWorld, I dunno... could be just me.
There were alot of innovative concepts such as the virus infecting all vampires.
The special effects were unreal. I thought the vampire mystique could have been better. They could have spent more money on the Club Scenes.
However a very good movie for it's type.

Blade 3 was shit. It was made for the straight to DVD release.
It looked like they made it in 2 weeks, with a script that was made overnight.

I mean the lead vampire, would be wise enough to know what happens as time moves on, and not be pulling an angry, Catcher in the Rye on consumerism and blade.
I dunno.
Atleast the UnderWorld series does not incorporate philosophical themes, but stay consistent with the story line.

I honestly think the appeal of the character of Edward was not that he was a vampire or the fact that he would harm her but because he wanted to PROTECT her so much. He had old school chivalry. In the book Bella was weak and needed protection and Edward was strong and always seemed to be there when she needed him. Edward is the perfect man. Minus the fact that he is not a man, but a vampire lol.

lol...hardly the first movie where teens were fooling around. I've seen far more disturbing. In fact, the books strongly send a message about waiting for marriage.

i read the book because my daughter loved it so much and wanted me to read it. It was... well written and good for a teenage girl. a little sophmoric for me. The movie though... was terrible.

how can you not like Seth Rogen??

YouTube - Observe and Report Trailer

for the record- i thought Pineapple Express was freakin hysterical!

I think I laughed once during PE, like when they were beating the dude in the apt. That's it. Nothing else in that movie was even remotely funny. Especially if you compare it to future masterpiece theater showcasers like superbad or stepbrothers.

And observe and report looks about as funny as that Paul Blart mall cop movie. Like maybe I'll watch it someday at 1am on TBS when I can't sleep......:whatever:

I agree with your opinion of Seth Rogan.

I thought he was hilarious in 40yovirgin and in superbad...and he was funny and cute in Knocked Up, but he keeps taking his shirt off and when he simulates sex(zach and miri) ...blah! Disgusting. Disgusting! ew ew ew I assumed it would be funny and bought the DVD before I saw it and now I own that peice of crap, and Im not sure I laughed at all in Pineapple Express. I dont smoke though so since Im not the stoner type maybe I just dont get it.
