I personally believe that there are three muscle groups that you can hit almost everyday: abs, forearms, calves.

Do a variation of different exercises for abs. Hit upper abs one day and lower abs the other. Hit the intercostals and obliques every other day.

I have already posted something about this in this thread. I believe the post was directed at Thandie. Scroll up a little bro :)

I know this is horrible..but trying to read through all this does anyone remember where I think Alc or someone posted up a 5x5 example routine? And does Anyone know where there is a simple online workout log that can be printed? Just a thought...if not...Man let's post one up somewhere as a sticky....Maybe even some genius can make one of those where you can add in whatever workout it is your doing.. sets reps ?

PS ok someone recommended switching up to fly's for a few weeks....so I did it..3 weeks total I think and the first week I hurt my shoulder so I had to "control" more and use light weight on the flys (65 to 90 lb bells) Mind you bishes this is natty so no making fun of the small #s...Before on the smith I was pushing 275 for 3 very slow very clean reps then POOF failure....Today I did chest 5x5 5 sets of 5 reps clean and smooth 275 every set. No drop in weight no cheating..granted with 30 seconds between sets I was...well I nearly vacated some methane and was grunting loud enough on the last few reps to clear out a girl that was doing some funky butt excersize by the free weights.

You mean like the Training Info Vault stickie at the top of this forum that has links to the 5x5 on madcow's site where you can download excel spreadsheets?

I have a somewhat unpopular feeling about abs that i would like to throw out for discussion.

I've got pretty strong abs but i rarely do exercises that target them directly. my ab strength has come from doing squats, deadlifts, weighted dips, standing DB/BB presses, power cleans, etc. Big lifts that require a strong core. I haven't done an ab "routine" in well over a year.

Anyone else do the same or am i just crazy. And no, i absolutely don't have good genetics :)

You're a beast onebreath ;-)

Your abs act to produce force (for lifting), it stabilizes the body to permit other musculature to produce force (during running or endurance activities), and is also called upon to transfer energy (during jumping). Now, if you have a strong abs (and I know where you got yours from prior to lifting heavy), great - you probably already excel at these things. However by training your abs you can increase your lifts and endurance. It can be a good addition to a training routine, depending on your goals. For example, I used to have a crazy strong lower back and abs from dance. I have been lifting heavy for a year and not really focusing on core work. I can't do the same moves that I could do just a year ago when I used to focus on my core although I know my abs are stronger now due to my lifting. Also, my abs had to become strong before I could squat 210lbs - not the other way around.

Your abs also act as a solid block on which the chest cavity sits. Watch sprinters, see how stable their torso is? Ab work.

So in summary - if you are a beginner or endurance athlete ab training can be crucial.

This discussion could go either way imo. Focusing on the core lifts only will supply plenty of stimulus for abd/low back development.

I feel there is a point were additional abd/low back work will help with these core lifts too. I kind of look at core work from a powerlifters perspective. My legs are stronger than my abds and low back. I will only be able to squat and pull as much weight as my core will support. With that being said... Crunches are for girls...no offense ironwings:)

I train abds 2-3 times a week. I only do things that I feel will benefit my squats and pulls. Standing pull down abds, heavy DB side bends, full contact twists, hanging leg raises, decline "needsize" abds. You can save all that fancy swiss ball 2000 set crunch BS for after spin class lol

Airborne thinking position...45lb weight on your back hold it for 2 minutes (my record in the army was 10 minutes) Essentially a pushup position. Tip of your toes but instead of hands hold yourself up with the tip of your elbows hands under your chin like youre thunkin!
