Hi Ladies, I'm new to this board and hoping to find some good suggestions for a workout routine that will keep me in top shape while I'm pregnant. Last year I lost my miracle baby to a miscarriage so staying as healthy and as fit as possible during this time is very important to me. I've been blessed with a second chance and I am now at 6 months and feeling strong and wonderful. Btw, I'm in my forties!

Just one question to begin with, what was your training like BEFORE you fell pregnant?

If you were a gym bunny before, there is more you can do.

If you are just starting to train while you are pregnant, then far less would be recommended.

The two things that I am aware of for training while pregnant

1. No bouncing cardio, so walking, bike, smooth x-trainers are ok, and NO major exertion.

2. If you do weights, again, nothing too heavy, and nothing while you are laying flat on your back.

When I saw the tittle of the thread, I got a bit nervous. Fortunately after reading it, I felt better.
There's a lady at my gym who is about...hmm, I'd say 6 months pregnant and she goes on the treadmill and JOGS everyday, then do leg lifts with a twist and a medicine ball. I honestly can't look at her. I have to avert my eyes. I think that's irresponsible!!
Anyway, Great advise Tat!!!
 
Thanks for the welcome and the good advice. Before I became pregnant I practiced yoga daily, hit the gym four days a week for two hour workouts including the cardio and cycle classes and worked out in my home gym the other three days. Since becoming prego I've modified the yoga to exclude anything that would put pressure on the baby, cardio has been reduced to brisk walks outdoors and I've taken a break from weights because I didn't want to take a chance of doing too much and end up harming my precious cargo, :). I agree that the lady in the gym seems to be irresponsible. It's so easy to miscarry even when you do everything right so it's just not wise for a woman to subject her unborn to that kind of stress and pressure.
 
Congratulations and welcome! I am no doctor but I will pass on the advice that my OBGYN gave me when I finally became pregnant after 13 months of unsuccessful trials. He told me, "Pregnancy is but a short time in your life. Do not exert yourself above and beyond the scope of what you would normally do for the simple fact: would you REALLY want to find out the hard way if this activity or that will negatively affect your baby, something that you have been waiting for... for how long?! You have the rest of your life after you deliver to get back into shape."

He was right.

I remained as active as I could with each subsequent pregnancy and never had an issue with my babies, deliveries or getting back into shape. So do what you are comfortable with and recognize that this period of time in your life is important but FLEETING! Do what you feel when you feel it... otherwise, enjoy your pregnancy. Pamper yourself and recognize that once your bundle of joy arrives... THE PARTY IS OVER! :lmao:
 
Thanks for the advice Bikinimom. You're right, it's better to be safe than sorry and it's so true how fleeting this time is! My baby boy will be here before I know it so I am definately going to enjoy the peace and quiet while I can, LOL!
 
Great thread! We need more threads about pregnancy/fitness.

its so confusing what to do and what not to do. No one wants to get fat, but no one wants to put baby in danger.

I wonder - should we continue our diet? Say the 5-6 meals a day high protein? Or should we do 3 meals, balanced

It is ALWAYS preferential to eat smaller more frequent meals. But this is especially true in pregnancy as the baby grows is pushes up on the stomach making it VERY uncomfortable to eat larger quantities of food.

It is interesting by the way you phrased your question that you assumed that a "typical bodybuilding diet" was not balanced?

Pregnancy is a time to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.

Accept the fact that it WILL change and YOU WILL gain some bodyfat. But this doesn't mean that you have to accept that you will be in that pregnancy/post partum shape FOREVER. :)

I suggest that through pregnancy is best to do moderate excersice. The baby and you will be a lot healthier and you will have a better time through labor. I exercise through pregnancy, but I did long walks and took the stairs instead of the elevator and it was much easier on both of us. Eating 5 meals a day is always best b/c you are adding food slowly into your system rather then eating too much in one sitting.

It should be a balance diet. Not high on protein or too high on carbs. Now more then ever you should have whole foods. Everything you have, the baby has.
As we all know, no caffeine, alcohol smoking, etc. But we should folow that without being pregnant..

well, a typical bodybuilding diet (high protein - 40-50 % protein, over 120 plus grams a day) how is that balanced? It might be the key to fat loss - but you'd think that wouldnt be good on kidneys or a fetus? Maybe anyway. I dont see how one wouldnt question that sort of diet during pregnancy.
