It's common sense. Why would you stand out and shoot at someone with bigger guns, when you can bury a bomb to blow them to hell when they cone driving by?

Standing orders make it awful hard to be a hero these days, so no matter what happens in movies, noone is going to carry three men to safety through the fog in slow motion with music playing while missing an ear, full of bullet holes, and wearing an American flag headband.

You get shot, you fucking die. Or at least go down screaming like a little bitch. You shoot someone else, they fucking die. That's what really happens.

Combat is not all guts and glory.

9/10 times, the enemy is going to retreat and you merely secure the area, you don't go all Rambo and slaughter a village with a pickaxe. The average infantry E-5 Marine had killed less than 2 people. That's a real statistic.

I deployed multiple times to Afghanistan during my service and even as a machinegunner in the Helmund Province, the biggest shithole in Afghanistan, I only ever had to directly take the lives of 4 people. IED's are the biggest concern, not some unprotected fucker with an AK walking out in the middle of the road.

War is not what you see on tv. It's a job just like any other, and there are very few dramatic points to a deployment.

my computer tech got his head/face all fucked up when an ied blew up his humvee in asscrackistan...spent a month in the hospital...then went back to his unit (or whatever you guys call those things)...a week before his return, another marine was killed by an explosive near the same village where my buddy was injured...so, anway, he rejoins his unit and the next week they roll up on the same village and start taking small arms and rpg fire, the village gets declared "hot" and they go door-to-door and kill everyone...and the way he tells a story like that is just so...odd...it's just a "story"...there's no chest-thumping or even any emotion to it...he just looks you in the eye and tells you what happened...i mean, dang, my wife is more animated most days when she's telling me about her day teaching middle school math...it's fucking eerie...you motherfuckers are stone cold...and i guess i'm a little bit envious.
