Good weight gainer/protein powder?

Branharris

New member
Hey all. Thought I might pick your brains for a sec....
I'm starting a new anabolic mass cycle and I want to add a good weight gainer powder with it. Any suggestions?

I'd say Big Blast from proteinfactory.com You can actually custom tailor the ingredients that you want to add to it, so it will contain exactly what you want it to, and suit the purpose you want it to.

Better bars and big blast are a great combo for weight gain , you dont end up consuming 100g of simple carbs like you do with a typical serving of traditional gainer.

I recommend Serious Mass from Optimum Nutrition. It is a good product and tastes great and doesn't leave you feeling sick after. However, it is expensive, 12 pounds bag will last you 15 days if you take one full serving everyday and it will last you 30 days if you take half of that serving daily.

I prefer to chew my food. Especially when trying to add mass.

Two better bars everyday is an extra easy 1000 kcal of real food.

That's $72.99 every 15 days??? For some crap calories and protein. Get REAL food for MUCH cheaper and be healthier while doing it. Taking in almost a pound of powder a day....unreal.

Anything other than BIG BLAST is essentially a cheap form of liquid food. You're better off eating steak and eggs and other mass producing food. But if you're going to add extra, make it something that isn't just empty calories -- something that is actually more nitrogen retaining than any food. That's BIG BLAST.

Gotta love nelson's explanations. This guy is the one who turned me to big blast. I've never turned back!!

I've been using Isopure and really like it. 0 carbs and 0 sugar. I prefer putting on lean mass. Big Blast has gotten my attention though. What is the sugar and carb content in it? I'm sort of sugar and carb phobic.

24g carbs, 14g sugar, 40g of protein per serving. Ingredients: CFM whey isolate, Dextrose, rice sugar, Super plasma protein, whole egg, creatine monohydrate, l-arginine, Alpha Ketoglutarate, aminogen, soy lecithin.

Also it is customizable. One thing I thought was disappointing was the soy lecithin. Why put that crap in there? Other than that it works well for me but as long as that soy lecithin is in there, I might not be buying it anymore.

What's wrong with lecithin? It has so many health benefit, including assisting in fat burning and liver detoxification.

Instead of explaining it myself, I will quote someone who is a lot more knowledgable than me.
"Lets talk more about this soy protein that is in the bar. All soy based Protein Bars and every single "pre packed Protein Bar" for that matter have one thing in common. They all contain an ingredent known as soy lecithin

What is soy lecithin?

In the early 1900***8217;s, the yet to be named ***8217;soy lecithin***8217; was just a waste product produced during the ***8220;degumming***8221; process of soybean oil. By 1908 the soy bean crushing and soy oil refining companies had expanded and they were having trouble disposing of the large amounts of foul smelling, fermenting waste product. Soy plants in Germany decided to name this waste product ***8217;soy lecithin***8217; and looked for ways to utilize it. By 1939 scientists had found more than 1,000 different ways to use soy lecithin.

It***8217;s important to note that solvents are used during the ***8220;degumming***8221; process of soybean oil, so soy lecithin itself is likely to contain chemical solvents

What is the name of the chemical used for the degumming process? Hexane!!!!!

Remember that name Hexane!!

The "natural" soy protein used in Protein Bars today is bathed in a toxic, explosive chemical solvent known as hexane. Hexane is used to process nearly all conventional soy protein ingredients and edible oils and is prohibited when processing organic foods like that found in Better Protein Bars.

Hexane is a neurotoxic chemical that poses serious occupational hazards to workers, is an environmental air pollutant, and can contaminate food."

All soy proteins isolate used to make Protein Bars are made using hexane baths.ALL OF THEM!!! If its in a Protein Bar, and its soy, it was given a hexane bath!!" -needtogetaas.

So, yes I would not like to be putting that crap into my body....

According to Nate in another thread (can't link it as I'm using the app), soybeans are degummed using hexane. He says that even though refined, soy lechitin is bound to contain trace amounts, and hexane is carcinogenic. He really advocates against the ingredient.

Wish I could link the post. It was in the thread about Better Bars started by psizzle8 where a guy was comparing them to why you could buy at 7-11, and off Amazon.

Edit: laxfiend got that posted as I was typing!

Thx all for your suggestions and debates. I'm learning alot. And a huge thanks for the direction to proteinfactory.com!!! I ll be ordering Big Blast this week. So stoked. This product seems amazing and I can't wait to test it out.

Some clarification on the soy lecithin issue.

First of all, the amount used to give texture and solidity to one of those candy bars requires a process that is more concentrated. The amount in a bar is far greater than the amount in a portion of a powder. Since Better Bars are made fresh, there's no reason to use lecithin.

But that aside...

Do you realize chemicals are used in the processing of almost everything you eat, including organic food? EVERY chocolate flavored protein powder includes soy lecithin even if it isn't listed (since the amount is so small). If it didn't the chocolate would separate, dry out and look and taste pretty gross.

What about artificial sweeteners? Gelatin capsules? Chalk used to keep capsules solid? There is virtually NOTHING that doesn't contain some chemical processing.

And not for nothin', but... GUYS ARE STICKING HORSE MEDICINE IN THEIR ASS AND YOU'RE AFRAID OF A LITTLE LECITHIN?!?!?

Not to mention, Soy lecithin is one of the best sources of natural choline, which has been shown to improve brain function and detoxify the liver.

So there's absolutely nothing to worry about taking BIG BLAST to get the gains that you want.

Nelson is right the amount used to make protien bars and candy bars is almost 100 times what is used to make other products. Still
I have a protein powder coming out soon that uses "EGG" lethine very soon. Egg lethin does not go through the same degumming process that soy does . Its the same lethine they use to make soy free babey formula . And for people who want 100 percent optimol health its the best you can get.

As of right now though you are stuck because there isnlt a protien on the market that does not have some trace amounts of soy lethine in it. O other then that which is now used in the better protein bars. I started with this products with plans to expand if it catches on. Its not cheap its double the cost of normal protein

I didn't mean to bash big blast. I was just basing my comments on what I heard from needto and a little research. I love big blast, take it everyday, or twice a day. So I'm not trying to start an arguement here. I just do the best I can to eat the healthiest foods, and inform others when I see ingredients which put up a red flag. But you and needto have cleared everything up for me. Thanks

P.S. I don't stick horse medicine in my ass or anywhere else on my body, and I could care less how other people treat their bodies.

I am looking forward to that protein needto. I will try it out for sure.

HA! Just making a joke about the extent some people go to build muscle. I appreciate the quest for health. I'm a health guy too.

Egg lecithin would be awesome, but yeah, it's WAY more expensive. Incidentally, BIG BLAST contains whole egg -- one of the very few protein supplements to do so (bedises the old Rheo Blair formula) and with good reason. WHole egg is the perfect amino balance, plus EFA's, and the body needs some cholesterol to make homones, PLUS, the yolk contains LECITHIN.

That's interesting. Another good thing about big blast I didn't know about. I bought 4 pounds of big blast and I'm already running low because I can't go a day without it. It definitely makes a difference, maybe its just in my head, but I feel better before/after/during workouts. All thanks to you for informing me about this great product. I used to just take regular protein, and that didn't perform nearly as well as big blast.

The bottom line is this: If Nelson or Nathan formulated the product, back the product, and sell the product themselves, you KNOW it WORKS and is good!

Yeah, it is more beneficial for those who doesent have time to cook food or in a hurry. Besides, half a serving is 600 calories and 25 grams of protein.

So, mixed with milk, half a serving of serious mass will yield 900 calories and 38 grams of protein. Good for hard gainers.

I suggest muscle juice revolution..
Took me from 180- 220lb using it between meals with real food
Good stuff.....

Yeahh take serious mass if you want some serious fat gain.

Now Optimum Nutritions Pro Complex Gainer is the best lean weight gainer I've personally ever used.

Currently Im using Ultimate Nutritions Iso Mass Extreme that a buddy gave me. Mixes fucking horribly but it was free and gets the job done.

It's not really a question of what is healthier. The goal is to add mass. Some people, especially hardgainers, struggle with eating the required calories, so weight gainers make it a bit more convenient to meet their calorie goals.
