Yup, another deadlift PR post

JOKER47

Elite Mentor
Pulled 405 raw today. (No belt, gloves or straps.) Actually went pretty easily. Felt like I might have had 415-420. Here's a pic if anyones interested:

I should note that the bar I use is 1 1/2 inches thick, and I don't have any chalk or a rosin bag yet, so I had to use dirt off the garage floor for my sweaty hands. *LOL* But hell, it worked.

I am aiming for 435 in 4 weeks.

HECK YEAH MAN!!!!!

I love it!!!!! Right down to the thicker bar, the garage gym, and the wrestling shoes!!!! Love it!!!!!

CCJ> Thanks. Yeah, they are hex plates. Standard size, no less. (1 inch.) I bought them before I had even started DLing. Nice thing though, they have little handles for carrying them around. You will notice though, that the last gray 50lbs plate on the end is round.:D

B-Fold> Thanks bro. :) The thicker bar took a little while to get used to, but I have found my grip strength going through the roof. You notice I put on my dress sweats for the pic?:D

Louden> Thanks. Sears had them on sale. The only problem was the pulley system on it was set up for only olympic plates. (All mine are standard 1 in.) Soooo....I took it off.:D

Thanks for the kind words all.

Love the "dirt" gym look... I do, working out in foo-foo land I can truly appreciate it.

However, I NEVER understand why people stick out their hips at the apex of the deadlift... I mean, sure... I understand WHY you do it, but it serves no function... other than cause a possible injury, especially at such a weight.

You mean the lockout?

Joker

When I have the bar locked out I am standing upright with my shoulders back.

I used to do the thing with the dirt too :) Then I discovered dust lol. The trainers used to think I was nuts climbing all over the cages and racks looking to dry my hands. Those were happy days.......

That's awesome man!! Excellent pull!! Maybe one day when I have a stronger back I'll be pullin shit like that. Hell of a job, my man.

Is that an olympic bar?

No. It's a 7', 1.5" dia. bar that accepts 1" plates. (You notice the "50" on the side of the black hex plates?) I had it made for me by a guy that runs a machine shop. He also made my dumbells. 22" long, 1.5" handles and take 1" plates.

Thanks again for the compliments guys.:)

Awesome job mah man. Welcome to the 405 club!!!! LOL at your face!

I have switched to sumo for a while to hit my hips and back at a different angle; I was having problems with my back tightening up during my leg workouts.

I will definitely update if I break 405 but I think I am going to be concentrating on other lifts and bodyparts for a while; there is a competition coming up at my gym and I doubt that DLs will be part of it. And while I will argue for DLs being included it will look like I am being self-serving because I am literally the ONLY person in my gym who deadlifts.

Again great job! keep it up!

i think he was trying to pull the weight back, as discussed in the deadlifting thread

The deadlift is a total body movement. Driving the hips forward is the toughest part for some people. You may notice that Hannibal's location reads: F/N the bar. This is how you move a heavy dead...pull back and drive forward with your hips. However, in that pic, you are leaned REALLY far back. Like you drove your hips forward, and then some. C-ditty is right...that can really compromise your back. The picture gives the illsuion that you locked it and held it there, when in reality you may have just hit this point for a split second as you were locking out, just before returning to a normal upright stance...who knows. Sometimes in a Max Effort PR attempt, form gets sacrificed for numbers. Been there. In general, it does seem a waste of effort, and a greater risk, to pull the bar beyond lockout.

Congats on the PR Joker....455 should be in your sights.

You're right, I was there in that position for just a second as my wife took the pic. If I appear to have leaned to far back, do you have a good reference pic for what a lockout shoud be? The leaning I am doing in my picture is what I thought a full lockout should be. That's what I was always aiming for, and didn't count the lift unless I got it.

Thanks,
Joker

OK, I gotta put Vogelpohl in here, cause he's my favorite. ;)

Thanks Spatts. I will keep this picture and keep it in mind next week on back day.

Great job, I especially love the no belt, gloves or strap part, that always makes a lift more impressive
Citrus, in a meet the rep doesnt pass unless you lock out, as a result most guys like to lock out on their reps same as in a meet. Even if I'm doing a set of 10 reps, I usually lock out on every one

I remember what 400 felt like!! Where I workout is really hardcore with a bunch of oldtimers-----they have 400 welded onto the bar!!!!!!!!!

sweet! nice job

few things

1. what are your stats

2. are you able to squat wide in that rack? looks sorta narrow...how do you get around this?

1. 5', 9", ~200lbs. BF%=?? But not obese. (I hear there are abs under there.:))

2. Yes, I can squat just fine. I usually squat with my feet right around shoulder width, but I can as wide as needed in the cage. I think it's just the pic that's gives the appearance that it's narrow.

Thanks NS. This board is a big reason I have been working on ditching the belt and never started using straps. (The gloves disappeared for a different reason.)
I doubt I would have had the guts to post that pic on here if I had a belt, gloves and/or straps on. I can imagine the flames.....:D

Needsize, I think C was talking about the way his hips are way forward and he's LEANING back...not the same as locking it out. You could technically be leaned back like that and NOT locked out...like if you're hitching.

I want to join the 405 club soon, but I lift kilo plates. Anyone in the 403 club? :lmao:

How do I know the difference? When I lean back like that, I go until it "feels" locked out. I don't know how to describe it exactly. But, if I stop before the point I go to, I don't feel like I completed the lift.

How do I know when I have locked out vs when I am just leaning back to far?
