you get what you pay for????

do you guys think this holds true for martial arts like it does for damn near everything else?

in my searches i've seen some schools that make a point on their websites to mention "low rates" or "lowest prices in the area" and while the instructors still seemed qualified, i am just leary of a school that emphasizes low prices. it makes me think they have trouble getting students or something.

also, there are some places that seem pretty expensive. and while i found an instructor i'd definitely like to train under, i don't know if i can swing the money. at 2 - 1 hour sessions a week, i'd be looking at around 225-360 a month, depending on whether i did private sessions or not. that seems pretty damn expensive.

not to be nosey, but what are all you guys paying for MA?

Regional lease rates, advertising campeign cost, competiton in the market, and name recognition can all inflate the cost of a program regardless of instructor skill. I pay $100 a month for unlimited lessons under a Carlos Machado BJJ Black Belt.

I wouldn't say you get whatyou pay for---you can still easily get ripped off in the MA biz world just like anywhere else. I'm sure there's school out there that have phenomenal instructors, and good rates.

On the same note, I'm sure there's bad instructors charging way too much.

BTW: 225-360 a month for TWO 1 hour sessions a week? Dude, I think you know the answer to that one.

yeah i am looking elsewhere.

I pay 85$ a month for 3 1 hour lessons per week and one hour of private a month in silat mande muda from an instructor of the highest level.

Still somewhat high in my opinion.

I paid 35 a month in 1982 till about 1988 in my first club. I met a guy in university who taught me for free( needed partners). I have never paid again( well, not money).
I cultivated a friendship with Hoy Quan Wong( my buddy's sifu) not to get training but because we liked each other and trained as a recreational activity.
I still pay for seminars like Danny's and the gracies but day to day training is always free.
And before someone shoots off about " you get what you pay for " my sifu is top notch as are my two kali training partners.
Some times you get the best of both worlds, good friends and quality training.

I pay about $135 per month and have Unlimited use of the facility and can take as many classes as I want. The place is open 7-days per week and classes begin at about 7:30am and the last class ends at about 10pm. It is a hardcore Muay Thai gym but there is a great Boxing instructor there too.
The whole program is really well scheduled. There are classes for: just clinch work, pad work, conditioning, sparring, and drill classes. The guys there are serious down to the core Muay Thai fighters, one of the instructors is fighting next Friday with 2 other students also on the card. The owner/head instructor is a pretty well known fighter with 50+ pro fights under his belt. He was made "Kru" under his Master(also world known). It really is a great place to train.

oh yeah... The gym supplies fresh clean towels every day, and you can eat as many apples as you want from a basket in the lobby. :D

i found a gym that seems to have pretty good prices. $90 monthly for muay thai, which has classes 4 days a week plus a separate class devoted to sparring. plus you get unlimited access to the weights/gym during normal business hours (too bad i just signed a 6 month contract for the gym i've been going to). you can cross train with something else for $125 a month. the other styles are MMA, NHB grappling, boxing, and K-1 kickboxing, and i think they're all $75, except K-1 which is $90.

the head instructor (mark "the shark" miller) teaches thai, boxing, and K-1. he is actually a K-1 superfight winner, and ranked 8th as pro muay thai heavyweight by IKF. the website says he also trained /fought in thailand, and trained under maurice smith (UFC).

aside from him, each style has a seperate instructor (i know you mentioned your caution about instructors who teach several styles). the other muay thai instructor was certified under ajarn chai sirisute, founder of thai boxing association USA. the NHB guy trained under sirisute in thai, and has grappling training under rorion gracie and erik paulson.

i'm considering the MMA program, which i think would be most suitable for what i'm looking for (street fighting/self defense), although i may still do some additional thai training.

i still have a couple other places to check out first though.

Bro,

this place sounds great. I would put it at the top of the list with everything you mentioned.
Just make sure you are allowed to use the facility even when you are not taking a class... That will really make a difference when you get more advanced and you want to go there on your own and hit the heavy bag. Once you are there for a while, you can agree to meet a couple of other guys there, during an off time you can go in and sparr or do some pad work with a buddy.

My "Kru" has a Sick high light film on the internet. I won't post it openly on the forums but if you drop me a PM I'll send you a link... Just promise not to share it with anybody. :)
