Yates - Blood and Guts

I'm just watching his training video. If he's actually working as hard as he appears to be. Forced reps, negatives. If he did this every workout how many weeks would it take till he injured or overtrained?

I know he's got great genes and drugs and I'm just middling average and not on AAS but I can't imagine last longer than about 8 weeks before something broke or I just died at this level of intensity.

Is this just a show of how hard he can work out or is this really representative of his approach to bodybuilding?

Dorian Yates desgined this video to show his viewers how he trains in the offseason weighing in at 315lbs.

Dorian has always employed high intensity technques, which includes training way beyond failure. Using these techniques allowed Dorian to train each muscle group every 6 or 7 days.

Throughout the course of Dorians career, he sustained a number of injuries. This includes a quad/hip tear in 1987, bicep tear 1994, and tricep tear in 1997. Most of these injuries were related to imbalance between tendon/ligament strength compared to muscular size and strength. Intensity probably played a role as well. The use of AS certainly help Dorian recover and synthesize protein faster than the average person. I once saw a stack and I didn't recognize any of the drugs. . .quite unique if you ask me.

Dorian has always trained in this fashion and has never been a huge fan of volume. His philosophy is always give a 110 percent effort at 110 percent intensity.

Not quite sure if this answers your question.

tom prince swears that dorian trained jst like every other pro bodybuilder(ton of volume), but just used the low volume in a similar manner that mentzer did= to sell books/videos. now prince could just be lying, but on musclemayhem, he said that he trained with dorian on several occasions.

having said that i think that dorians training shown on blood and guts is a pretty good routine.

I just wish I had some spot with a hardcore accent the one Dorian had with him on the video. COME ON NOW PUSH IT OUT LADDY SQUUUUEEEEZE!!! (gay jokes aside)

Funny how I can hear that shit in my head and it helps me stay intense =)

prince might have said that because he's counting warm up sets.

Dorian has said before that he has to back off every few weeks or else he gets a cold or starts regressing.

Agreed about the warm-up sets. Dorian typically did 3 exercises per bodypart, and would do maybe 3 warm-up sets before getting real nasty with a failure set. A total of 12 sets/bodypart might constitute high enough volume in some people's eyes.

Whatever the case is, I definitely don't buy that Dorian just put on about the one working set stuff to sell books or videos. I think that actually hurts marketability.

Ask yourself, how many guys do you know that'd just balk and laugh at doing one working set, never even considering that it could be worthwhile?

If you want to sell a lot of something in a fickle market, it should be somewhat unique but not necessarily so far-out that you alienate your product. On some level, you've got to go with the flow.

Prince is a smart man and should know better than that. Besides, Dorian's a real no-bullshit kind of guy, and too many other people have said that's the way he trained.

This is information that I have read through the years. . .I have followed Dorians career history since 1994.

I have spoken to Dorian on many occasions about his training, and just like any other pro bodybuilder he used periodisation. In the off season I can confirm that he trained like he did in the video (or that’s what he and other members of his team have said to me), however yes, there are a lot of sub maximal warm up sets to build up to the maximum set.

As Louden posted, he had a number of injuries, which ultimately lead to his retirement. When it takes 30 mins of massage and stationary cycling just to get you loosened up enough to get you out of bed in the morning, then you know your body has taken enough punishment.
